ID2.0.2 (Mac) error "Cannot open the document xx. You may not have..."

I have 2 people in the department that are working with the same files. These files are located on a mac file server running OS X 10.2.8. For example, Tom will open up the file XX. Allison will open up the same file, and realize that Tom is using it. So she asks Tom to close the file. Tom closes the file and then Allison opens it. Allison gets the error message "Cannot open the document 'XX'. You may not have permissions or the document may be open already." We have tried a few variations on this. I have had both Tom and Allison close out of ID completely, trash the server share, etc, but nothing seems to work. Once she tries to open it when it is already open with someone else, her computer always gives her the error message. And then randomly, Allison can open the file but not always and sometimes 15 minutes later. We have looked on the server for the temporary Indesign files, but those disappear when Tom closes the file. There has to be a lock file somewhere else--but where? Anyone have any ideas on what to try? Allison has OS 10.1 and Tom has OS 10.2.8.

I have exactly the same problem, only differance is that I have a Windows 2000 server as my file server. User A cant access the file but when I log onto another Mac with her username and password it works! Go figure? I blame the Mac (nothing personal)

Should anyone manage to figure this one out, let us know?

We have a similar set-up to you, Andrea: 10.2.8 on a 'server' (in reality just an older Mac with a huge hard drive) but encounter none of the situations you describe.

However, we have a preference pane on the server called Sharepoints which I think is the key to our trouble-free system. It's available from <http://www.hornware.com>

I've never actually configured it: it was installed for us some six or seven months ago by our tame engineer and if it ain't broke...

So, I'm not alone,

My variation of this error is this; Whenever I burn an InDesign 2.0 file to disk and then reinsert the disk to open the file, I get the message..."Cannot open the document. You may not have permission or the document may be open already." I always have to ask my design partner to check out my disk before sending it off to the printer. Maybe, like Andrea says, there is a "lock" setting somewhere? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do any of you with this problem have file names contain any periods (except for the one delimiting the file extension)?

There is a known issue with InDesign 2.X (fixed in CS) in which the application looks to everything to the left of the first period in a filename as being the document name. (It should be looking at everything up to the file extension.)

What this means is that if you have two files - myFile.1.indd and myFile.2.indd, ID 2 will incorrectly think that they are the same file - named myFile, and will not let you open the "same" document as one that is already opened.

If this is the source of your problems, the best solution is to rename the files.

It sounds like an OSX problem to me. We had this problem too, until we
got our server set up correctly to inherit priviligies to enclosed
folders when saved on the server.

Until then we fixed the problem having the creator machine of the file
to open it and - cmd i - Ownership & Permissions - to give permissions
for all to Read & Write.

I cannot recall having the problem since the server was set up
correctly.

That little problem has been driving me crazy. I renamed my files and Voila---error message gone.

Please tell me more about this.

Some OSX Users are having this trouble, very often. The files are shared on SMB server. When I get into the directories no any special related files are found. Dropping the ~/Library/Caches/ of ~/Preferences/Adobe/* wont do it.

Ejecting the shared volumes from Finder and accessing again (Connect To Server procedure) is my only 100% guaranted solution. But of course I cannot tell all my users to perform this all the time.

Im little confused. Please help, your approach looks more correct.
