Drop shadow blur failure

Hi guys
I'm trying to get a blurred drop shadow on a simple rectangle, but the "blur" section of the stylize>dropshadow dialogue box under both filter and effect is greyed out.
In the same illustration I have other objects which have a blurred dropshadow, achieved in the normal way under effects>stylize>dropshadow, but this now doesn't work any more.
If I edit the correctly dropshadowed objects by double-clicking the Dropshadow entry in the Appearance tab, as soon as I hit the preview tickbox, the dropshadow loses its blur and becomes a hard edged shape.
Blur appears to work fine in the Feather, Inner glow and outer glow effects, but I need dropshadows today...
Doesn't make any difference if the doc is CMYK or RGB or spot.
I have tried re-installing and it has not made any difference.

Deleting the file AIprefs worked, for technophobes like me the file can be found here: (extract from help file)
In Windows, this file is called AI Prefs. In Windows 98 and ME, it is located in the Windows\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 10 folder.
In Windows NT, this file is located in WinNT\Profiles\user name\ Application Data\Adobe Illustrator 10 folder.
In Windows 2000 and XP it is in the Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 10 folder.
In Mac OS, the preferences file is called Adobe Illustrator 10.0 Prefs.
In Mac OS 9.x, it is located in the System Folder\Preferences\Adobe Illustrator 10 folder.
In Mac OS X, it is located in the Mac OS X\Users\Home\Library\Preferences\Adobe Illustrator 10 folder.
