Any ideas?
Thanks.

Right click the file in the Open menu, Properties, and be sure there is no check mark in front of READ ONLY. It would appear that you opened or Copy'd the file from a CD-R disk. All files in CD-Rs have the READ ONLY attribute and to Save to, Move, or Delete it, you have to change that attribute. You can do a Save As to another filename, but can't do anything to the original until the change is made.

Thanks. By the way I am on a PC, Win98. I followed your directions and "read only" was not checked, but "Archive" was checked. I saved as and named it something else. That has appeared to have solved the problem.
Thanks.

I'm glad to hear you have the problem solved. I often forget the Save As trick, but it's something that has been around for some versions now. For some reason, the Save As option will often correct a corruption problem and also used to be a method of reducing the size of an .ai image file.

Also I am working on a network and now I can't even delete the old file that I don't want because it says there is a file share violation - but I don't have it open. Our network admin couldn't even delete it! HELP
One of the problems related to working directly from a server. You should only store an Illustrator file on the server AFTER first a Save to the local work station. Copy/Paste it to an appropriate folder on the server, then the next time you need to work on it, you copy/paste the file from the server again onto your system, work on it, Save it there, and copy (don't move, just in case) to the server. Keep the copy perhaps archived on a CD or other practical media. You are running into One such problem that can occur when you don't follow that procedure.
Have you tried the copy/paste of the file to your system from the server? To get rid of that file, you'll have to do a lot of tracking down to see what might be claiming to own it. Usually on a local system, you have to close down everything and next when you open the hard drive, that's when to do the Move, Rename, or even Delete, prior to anything opening that could lay claim to the file. Since I never work directly to the server, I've never had to do that to the server, but suspect it's similar.
