I often have problems with the scissors tool. I'm trying to cut some simple paths, one is closed, the other open. But the scissor tool always gives me the error message that it cannot cut the path, please use the scissors tool on a segment or an anchor point (but...) of a path.

Well, that's exactly what I'm doing, cutting on a segment. What could be wrong?

I'm using version 8.01 on NT 4.

Thanks

Deselect the open or closed path select the scissor tool the click on the path were you want to cut it.

Thanks, it worked. The help file threw me off. It says to select the path to see its current anchor points. Then select the scissors tool then click the path where you want to split it. It doesn't say to deselect before using the scissor.

Also, I was using smart guides. I guess it doesn't work with them turned on.

Well actually it does work whenyou have the path selected. I thought this would get you started. and it works with smart guides on as well. It is a little sensitive and I would zoom in a bit to make sure you are actually on a path or an anchor point.

Now that you have it working, Try it again only this time zoom in on the object a bit and then try it and see if you are doing better.

Sorry to get back to you so late. I've tried cutting a path again with smart guides turned on, up close, and it won't work. I know I was on the path because the smart guides provide that notification. By the way, I'm using version 8.01. I've tried it on the version 10 tryout and it does work fine.

I'm stuck with version 8 at the office, so I wonder if you know a work-around for this problem, short of turning off smart guides (I really like keeping them on).

Thanks,
Tony

I don't have version loaded anymore and do not know the answer.

Hi TonyB,

The problem you are experiencing was a bug in Illustrator 8.0.1.

Best solution, other than turning off smart guides, is to upgrade to a newer version of Illustrator.
