What type of object? Compond paths and very complex shapes do not work with GM -- use a basic rectangle and convert you original object to a mask.

I have CS and am trying to click inside a filled shape with the Gradient Mesh tool, but it won't allow it, only on the path of the object. What am I doing wrong?

No, it is not complex, it happens when I draw any circle or square using the tools.

Do you perhaps have the "Object Selection by Path Only" preference checked (in General Preferences)?
