Are you using Illustrator 8.0.1?
And are you getting an error something like "Can't cut the path. Please use the scissors tool on a segment or an anchor point (but not an endpoint) of a path."
If so, you're the second person to post with this problem today--what a coincidence!
Try the following, taken from the Adobe knowledgebase:
When you use the scissors, pen, add anchor, delete anchor, or convert direction point tool, Adobe Illustrator 8.0.x returns one of the following errors:
- "Can't cut the path. Please use the scissors tool on a segment or an anchor point (but not an endpoint) of a path."
- "Can't add anchor point. Please use the add anchor tool on a segment of the path."
- "Can't convert the direction-point. Please use the convert direction-point tool on an anchor point of a path."
- "Can't delete the anchor point. Please use the delete anchor point tool on an anchor point of a path."
