How do I turn on the ruler as a defualt every time I open the program? I have just upgraded to Illustrator CS2 and am finding a problems that I can't solve. I want the ruler to appear each time I open a file without having to go view/show rulers. I am sure this is an easy one but I can't get it :-)

You will need to edit your Adobe Illustrator Default startup files. There is one for CMYK and one for RGB files.
They are located in the following directory:
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS2\Plug-ins"
and are called: "Adobe Illustrator Startup_CMYK.ai" and "Adobe Illustrator Startup_RGB.ai" respectively.
Heres the process
1-open the startup file sin Illustrator
2-turn on "show rulers" option in your View menu
3-"save" or "save as" the file over itself
4-Repeat steps 1-3 for the other startup file
All of your document should now open with rules

Those steps will cause new documents to be created with rulers visible.

Existing documents should open with the same ruler settings and whatever other view options they had when they were saved.

Christy, were you missing the rulers when you opened documents, or just when you created them?

I was missing the rulers when creating new documents.

JerronSmith- Thanks. That worked beautifully. I would have never figured that out!

Always make copies of the "factory" startup files before you start messing with them. You never know...

I don't think the RGB/CMYK startup files get corrupted because they are only read from and never written to during normal Illustrator operation. steve

In my experience you'll have to keep re-doing this because of all of the errors with prefs files.

It's easier to just go Windows> Workspace> Save Workspace and then click that workspace every time you open a document.

I have tried creating new startup files and they don't hold.

You may have something strange going on in your confuser and your Workspace files may be vulnerable as well. steve
