First time user of Illustrator CS. I used the rectangle tool to create
a few boxes to fill but I don't want the gray border around the boxes.
What should I be doing?

Draw the rectangle, the while it's selected (corner points highlighted),
look at the toolbar where you see the color selection area for the fill and
the border. The little box below that (to the right) with the red slash in
it. Clicking on that removes the color from either the fill or the border,
whichever is in the foreground.

Good answer... but for further info for beginners... :D

word "Border" is used in Illustrator as "Stroke". So you want to make
the stroke colour none.

No. 2 is ... how to get fill or stroke to the foreground? Simply click
on either one on the toolbox or you can also use colour palette or
swatch palette.

(Just to make it more clear) :)
