I keep getting the following error message when I try to save an Illustrator (*.ai) file: "Acrobat PDF File Format is having difficulties. Unable to open file for writing. It may be locked or unavailable." Why can't I save, and what the heck does saving as an Illustrator file have to do with the PDF format? I'm running Illustrator 10 on Windows XP professional on a Dell box (2gig P4). The files are saved to a network using Novell software.

Any clues?

Illustrator 10 .ai files are based on PDF format (unlike version 8 and prior which were based on EPS). How long is the character count of the path from drive to .ai"? Do you have any extended characters anywhere in that path, including "foreign" accented letter characters?

If you are having problems with corrupt files or missing files or Save not working from Illustrator 9/10 there may be a solution. It turns out that if your .AI file is in a path with non-English characters or if the path is too long you will get a strange error about having problems with writing the .PDF file format from Illustrator 9/10. See the Adobe document 325878 as found at <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/26b3e.htm> for details. Other save problems can come from moving files and folders around from their original locations.

I am having the same problem. I make changes to illustrator 10 files and when i try to save, it gives me "can't save illustration".

no matter what i do. change the name, change the location, etc.

I've tried all of the fixes that have been mention in dealing with this problem but still get the message. I even tried opening a new file in Illustrator and saving it to my hard drive using a simple 8 character file name but it still gives me the error. Something is not working properly between Illustrator and the PDF naming convention but I don't have clue what. Adobe needs to address this issue soon or I'm going to jump ship and start using Macromedia Freehand instead.

If you have "tried all the fixes" including all those suggested above, the I recommend you call Adobe Technical Support by phone and ask to talk to a second level support person. This is not Adobe but other Users just like you.
