Kristina,

Could it be standing to the rear of another palette or included into a palette as a tab that you are missing?

I'm running Illustator 10 and the layers palette is missing. Selecting and f7 doesn't work... Is there a solution for this?

I'm having the same problem in version 9.0.2. I've looked in all of the palette windows to see if the Layers tab has moved to another set, but no luck. In the Windows menu, "Show Layers" is listed as an option but selecting it or pressing F7 does nothing. Also, it remains "Show Layers" after selecting it, whereas the other window options change to "Hide xxxxx" in the window menu (when their palette appears).

I've tried reinstalling from scratch and updating to latest verison of 9.0.2 but still nothing. I've also tried resizing the desktop to the biggest size to see if it had slid off the edge of the window, but have found nothing.

Any ideas? It's a pretty important feature to not be able to access.

After poking around, we might have a solution, at least for folks on ver. 9.x.

In c:\Program Files\Adobe\
lives the folder for illustrator and it is named something like "Illustrator x.x.x" where the x's are the version numbers. Mine was Illustrator 9.0.1. I had upgraded to 9.0.2 but the name of this file stayed at 9.0.1. By changing the folder name to 9.0.2 the layers palette came back. It's odd that the updater didn't take care of renaming the file, but hopefully this will provide some use to others with the same problem.

Rob:

Have you removed the AIPREFS file (it can be a hidden file) with Illustrator closed. That's probably what happened with your file name change.

Yep, the deletion of the "aiprefs" file fixed it. Doing a search for it finds it in the "Documents and Settings" path to the "Adobe Illustrator 10" file folder on Win 2K. No clue as to how it went bye bye, but it's back! Dang! I thought I was going crazy and started to doubt my self worth as a graphic artist.

Thank you for this answer. I spend 4 hours trying to find my missing layer palette. Deleting AIPrefs in Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 10 did the job. The layerpalette went when using GoLive smartobject.

Wade/Peter:

I'm glad I could assist you both. I haven't heard back from Kristina or Rob.
