Howdie.
This is a frustrating bug because it does not happen all of the time, and I have never been able to pin down as to what triggers it. As a result, I have to constantly zoom way in to check that things are where they are supposed to be.

If I set my nudge distance to say, 2in, and then use the arrow keys to move a selected object around the screen, when I nudge back to where it started from, it no longer is in the original position. In other words, the nudge did not stay at 2in during each arrow click. It usually happens in only one of the two directions, up/down or left/right nudge. It MAY be triggered when the object crosses over the dimensions of the page setup even if you are outside the page itself the whole time. In other words, imagine vertical and horizontal guidelines passing through the edges of the page. Regardless of where the object is on the work area, if it is nudged ACROSS one of those boundaries, that MAY be what triggers this, but don't know for sure.

I use CS3 13.0.2

Thanks.

Treddie:

One condition that causes your problem is having View> Snap to Grid (Ctrl + Shift + " is the toggle) on.

Hello Steve.

I believe I checked for that on a number of occasions and it did not seem to be that. When it comes up again, I'll make doubly sure. What bothers me about THAT eventuality is that since nudge is set to a SPECIFIC value, and the arrow keys respond to that specific value, Illustrator should be smart enough to realize that Snap-to-grid should be ignored whenever the arrow keys are being used to nudge. Otherwise the logic of it all is inconsistent.

Treddie, I agree that this behavior is annoying, but on the other hand it can be useful for using the keyboard to move objects when one wants them locked to the grid. There is a sort of logic here, note that when you have Snap to Grid on, Smart Guides is turned off.

Hm...true. I will just have to keep an eye on this when it crops up again. But I recall testing this on a MAC too some years ago, and making sure snap-to-grid was off. I'll have to see whether this is a false memory or not.
