I'm a graphic student. At School we have PCs with Windows' QuarkXpress 4 and Illustrator 9.
I made a document in Quark and Professor told me to save it as .EPS so as to open it in Illustrator and make some changes that were needed. The problem is... Illustrator keeps posting the same error message: "the file "C:/documentname.EPS" is an unknown format and cannot be opened.
But it did open ONCE, but not anymore! Even the Professor doesn't know what to do. I even did the whole Quark project again!
I've been trying to get this problem solve for almost a week now and I'm really frustrated. Please, somebody help me!

Your professor should know that EPS files are NOT meant for editing. Sure some will open in Illustrator. Some will opn in PhotoShop after rasterizing. Some can be opened in Quite a Box of Tricks or other applications. But the encapsulated PostScript file is meant to be sent directly to a PS printer -- not opened and edited.

What changes are necessary to be made in Illustrator that cannot be made to the Quark file? I don't use QXP so maybe there is some reasoning behind his strange request.

Since PostScript is a language that can be edited in any text editor you can manipulate the PS output that way. But it takes a lot of knowledge and skill. Maybe your professor can do that?
