Recently purchased and installed CS4 Web Premium.

Launch Illustrator CS4
Click Open on welcome Screen
Illustrator Crashes with this error:

Dummy:Illustrator.exe – Fatal Application Exit
The specified module could not be found. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4\4.0.1\VersionCue.DLL

Windows Vista 64 SP1
Existing Applications prior to Web Premium:
* InDesign CS4 stand alone
* Adobe Creative Suite 1 Premium

Tried running in XP compatibility, never gets past load screen
Tried running as Administrator, same error

Tried running updates: 5 of the 8 available CS4 updated failed to install (none appeared to be associated with Illustrator, however).

Anyone else encounter this or know of a solution?

Dont' know why the error lists "Dummy: Illustrator.exe" nor why it is looking for version 4.0.1 of the VersionCue.dll. I located version 4.0.0 in a slightly different directory path.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4\Client\4.0.0\VersionCue.DLL

I may try moving a copy into the expected location and see if that allows a launch.

Nope. Placing a copy of the version 4.0.0 of VersionCue.DLL in the expected location didn't work.

Further Addendum: Attempted to use the Adobe Auto Update for VersionCue 4.0.1 = Failed

Also tried directly downloading the update and installing that... failed.

This is getting old real quickly.

Located a workaround in the VersionCue forum. Still not a FIX, just a kludge.

Seriously...

Did the error message really address you as "Dummy"?

Yep.

Try it out.

Temporarily rename the Version Cue CS4 folder something else so that it 'breaks' and check it out.

It COULD be a result of how I had to activate my upgrade by installing it in trial mode and then activating with a challenge code with the help of Adobe Tech support.

But even so... ^_^

Final resolution achieved by painful uninstall, clean and reinstall process as noted in the post below:

This issue is now documented in the following tech doc, "Error "Adobe Setup has stopped working," when attempting to install updates for Adobe CS4 products (Windows)"

Link produces "not authorized" error.

Search of KB with that number results in "no documents found."

Give it another try. There was a problem with our KnowledgeBase (KB) authoring system yesterday, which got resolved last night.

The root cause of this issue has finally been identified. This issue, cause, and solution are documented here:

<http://www.adobe.com/go/kb408524>

Please note that if a previous update failed due to the root cause, then it can leave your files in a state which will prevent future updates from working, simply because they don't find the files in the expected state. In which case, you need to do the complete solution, which involves a clean re-install (sorrry :-(

Sincerely,
Matthew
