I have a job that requires some simple "rope", so I thought I'd just build a short length (from an "s" curve with some "fur" for shading), and convert it to a pattern brush to stroke a path. Generally this worked quite well, but I keep getting a very narrow white gap between successive tiles.

I tried changing the end-caps on the component paths to see if that would bridge the gap, but alas, no. I also checked to be absolutely sure that the pattern starts and ends on a true vertical plane. This does not happen with the canned pattern brushes supplied by Adobe, although at high magnification I can see a dotted line between the tiles.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
Peter Spier

This thread <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?128@@.2ccd2eec> over on the Illustrator for Macintosh forum may provide some insight for you.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Very helpful!

The key was adding a box behind to define the tile. Thanks so much.

I only knew where to tell you to look so easily because I was involved in that recent thread and Teri put together that little tutorial for us Luddites still stuck at version 8.

Look for and pay attention to JET's (James E. Talmadge) posts...he has a number of really nice PDF's explaining interesting and/or confusing techniques. Unfortunately—despite requests that he do so—he hasn't gathered them all together with links on a separate page of his website.

Phosphor,

Speaking of which, are your "Illustrator Academy" tutorials gathered together with links on a TOC page?

(I have bookmarks to a couple of them that you've posted, like the Text on a Path one, but they don't have any "home" link on them, and when I tried the parent directory (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/phoz/), it just put up a blank page saying "Welcome to your personal web page", which I guess is some default from comcast.)

I just want to say a sincere thanks to all of you who spend so much time monitoring these forums. This was my first post to the Iluustrator forum, but I've used a number of others, and I almost always get a really great answer to my problem within 24 hrs.

These forums are probably the most valuable resource I can think of for any Adobe program, and are head and shoulders above other vendors.

Ouch! You'd think they would have given free account holders a long grace period to download their own files.

I wasn't criticizing you, though, just asking. I've never taken the time to put together a TOC page for my Illustrator-related stuff, either, so I could hardly take anyone else to task for the same failing.

"Speaking of which, are your "Illustrator Academy" tutorials gathered together with links on a TOC page?" Touché, Teri. Quite frankly, they garnered so little interest I have kind of left them go into dry-rot. I used to have them all linked together, but the free server I was using (before I got my Comcast account) went pay-only, and I lost access to all my files. My only backups are sitting on a SCSI hard drive on a presently non-booting PowerCenterPro 210. Yeah, I know...shame on me.

I really should rebuild it (the 210 and the web site.)
