Can't use Edit Original in Illustrator 9

Help this has been bugging me forever. All the jpg images in my .eps files are dragged from a folder on my computer then dropped into a template .eps illustrator file. I do not know if this is the proper way to do it, but I can not use the edit original command on ANY images in any of my .eps files, its grayed out and I have no idea how to fix it. Please HELP!!!
