'Offset path' not working

I'm using Illustrator CS4, Windows Vista. I can't get 'offset path' to work in one of my files. It works fine when I open a new file, so it's something about the file I'm working in. It's not a particularly big file. Anyone any ideas?

Hi Jacob, I think you helped me out with my last daft question. I've managed to work this one out myself. I was using a negative value which was greater than the size of the shape, so nothing happened - nothing to do with the file at all!
