Hi,
I'm trying to use the "arrange" shortcuts, and nothing works..
My regional settings are "Dutch (Belgian)", but the decimal symbol is changed to a dot (and group digit symbol to a comma), so I can still use
the dot underneath the "3"-key. Could the problem evolve from that setting?
No matter what version of Illustrator (8-9-10), it still doesn't work.
I saw that with CTRL+SHFT+ALT+"K", you can add some additional shortcuts of your own, but "send backwards" and the likes isn't even in that list???!!
Who can help here?
I'm running on WDS 2000 (earlier on NT)
Thanks a megabyte times!
Jan (technical illustrator)

Jan,

On a UK keyboard it is:

CTRL + [ = Send Backward
CTRL + ] = Bring Forward
CTRL + SHIFT + [ = Send To Back
CTRL + SHIFT + ] =Bring to Front

Dear Len,
I know what the shortcuts are, but they don't work!
ctrl+shift+] is NOT bringing the object to the front,
that's the problem. Neither of the arrange shortcuts
do what they are supposed to do...
Who can help? Should I fix something in the program code?
Jan

Jan,

Which I think tells us that the Dutch Regional setting re-maps the '[' and
']' keys, compared to a US or UK keyboard yes?

But until someone who uses Dutch Regional settings comes along..........

Check to see if the items are on separate layers or not.

I believe that this shortcut works on items WITHIN the same layer, but not on items on separate layers.

If the item is on a separate layer, you can move the layer to the top, or you can "cut" (ctrl-c) the item out of that layer and paste (ctrl-f) it into the other layer.

(anyone out there -- feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

A couple of things:

You can also select an object on another layer and then choose OBJECT/ARRANGE/SEND TO CURRENT LAYER, to bring an item into your currently selected layer. That's pretty cool, and I didn't know about it until looking into your problem. I'm sure I'll use it all the time now.

Also:

I saw that with CTRL+SHFT+ALT+"K", you can add some additional shortcuts of your own, but "send backward" and the likes isn't even in that list?!

Actually, when you do the CTRL+SHFT+ALT+"K", look near the top where you see the dropdown box that says "Tools". Click on that and select "Menu Commands", then click on the arrow next to "Object", then click on the arrow next to "Arrange". You should see the "send backward" shortcut there.

Hope this helps!

- Steve

Hello,
thanks for the replies so far.
I think what I (and Poul, and many others all over Europe??) need is someone (European?) with the same kind of keyboard (where the "[" is achieved by pressing CTRL+ALT+^: that square bracket is pictured at the right downmost side of the button next to the "P" button) who took the time to go into the programming code of Illustrator and figured out how to make the aformentioned shortcuts possible to use. Or else someone with a support contract with Adobe who can post this problem to one of the Illustrator people..
It has indeed nothing to do with layers, I have only one layer when I tried to use the shortcuts.
I need to know how to tell my keyboard that when I push the ^ or the $, I actually mean the [ and the ], which is weird to start with..

Jan, Poul,
just to let you (and countless others) know, you're not alone in this. It doesn't work with Slovenian keyboard either, so I suppose it works again only with US/UK keyboard. Which is a shame, because the shortcut always worked in InDesign, but not in Illustrator. I hope the guys at Adobe will one day fix this (at least at v.73 ;) ).

Tomaz,

Have you guys ever written in your problems here? <http://www.adobe.com/support/feature.html> Perhaps it could be addressed there. I'm not familiar with what Help desks in other European versions might have.

Hi,
Have you checked your layer arrangement? Just check whether there is another layer on top of the layer that contains the object you want to bring to the front; and also ensure you have the correct layer selected.
