I recently updated to Illustrator CS4. When I select some text then target the font name in the character panel, I use to be able to use my scroll wheel on my mouse or the arrow keys on the keyboard (i'm on PC, Vista) to go through my fonts.
In CS4 I can scroll through a handful before it either blanks out and doesn't say any font in the character panel or it jumps to the bottom of the font list to the MS fonts. It appears to be random when it decides to jump to the bottom of the list.

So I had the bright idea to copy the font folder from another Vista machine, and copy over the font folder that I figured had a problem font...

Now scrolling though fonts it will crash Illustrator.

I am fully prepared to reinstall the program, but I have so many custom keyboard shortcuts and workspaces, I wouldn't even begin to know where to look for all those files so I don't loose my custom stuff.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem, but partially solved it by removing what appear to be corrupt or questionble fonts. The list would consistently jump on hitting those fonts and while I'm not entirely convinced that the fonts were corrupt, Illustrator thought they were, so it's the same result. It will still sometimes jump to the bottom of the list for no apparent reason, but it's not as bad as it was.

We need a fix for this now.

So far I have found some fonts downloaded from Dafonts is having the same issue, and also MS fonts. Such fonts so far are MT Extra, and MV Boli.

If I find more, I'll add them on.

I have found a fix.

First delete (or back up your fonts)

Now install a font manager like MainType and have it run your personal fonts on a separate folder.

Now I'm not completely sure if this was the why it started working again because I had used the CS4 cleaner and and re-installed CS4 completely.

Please try it, and post on here if it works or not.

I am using Extensis Suitcase 11 for Windows when I made this post. So that is not a solution.

Something else to try:
In Illustrator CS4 choose Edit > Preferences > Type.
Remove the check-mark for Enable Missing Glyph Protection.
