Using Illustrator, I need to find a way to draw realistic looking crazy straws that coil and loop and can be semi-transparent with surface color and lighting. Tried in Dimensions and failed because I can't extrude along a path. Can do it in Strata, but can't bring it into Illustrator. Any suggestions?

Rana,

Use your pencil tool to make your crazy straw. give it a large stroke weight (perhaps a 10pt or even 20pt) then add Round Stroke Cap, color of choice and add Opacity to Transparency option (perhaps something like 63%). Epand, if you want, but it's not necessary, depending on what you want. Doesn't that do what you want?

Try this: Make two ovals, each with a slightly different graident fill.

Use the blend tool with a high number of steps.

Edit the path to look crazy.

Dear Bob, Thanks for the suggestion but I can't get strokes to accept gradients which I need for the 3D effect. I appreciate your input though.

Rana,

Expand and your strokes can be given a gradient.

Don't forget you can also use gradient mesh and transparency on those expanded strokes, Rana.
