First off, thanks in advance for your time, especially for a noob like me.
Can you tell me how I would go about making a box in illustrator in which I
could have colored, but have one side with a smooth wave to it? Similar to
the effect that they have created on this Brochure template:
http://www.stocklayouts.com/Products/Details.aspx?name=GB0430101

I know how to make a square, circle, hexagon, but I don't know exactly how
to go about morphing the shape into something smooth and flow-y.

Any help you could give me would be much appriciated!
Thanks!

Hi spaceyjane,

There r several ways to do it. I think "Pen tool" is the better. U can
use Pen tool and other tools which r inside the pen tool such as
"convert anchor point tool". Use help to learn more about using pen
tool.

Another way is to draw a rectangle, and with "convert anchor point
tool" curve the lines.

A quick way it to do the same is... draw a rectangle, and use the
Filter > Distort > Twist :)

Hope this would help your Q.

What I usually do (I've done a few of these types of boxes for brochures and
such) is create a box element the size of the finished panel (such as, for a
tri-fold 8.5 x 11, it would be approx. 8.5 x 3.6) and then draw the curve
using the pen tool, making sure to close it off as a closed path and making
sure that the wave is larger than the box element/panel. Then make sure that
the "wave" is on *top* of the box element, select both, and click "Minus
front" on your Pathfinder palette. The "wave" element should then disappear,
leaving you with only the waved box element!!

Not as graceful as some techniques I've seen for this. But super simple and
super, super QUICK!! :)

HTH!! :)

Learn to use the pen tool. It's one of the most important tools in the box.
Then make a wavy verticle line to your liking, lick off, Choose your
selection tool (V) hold down your Alt key, select your wavy line, and drag
the line to the left. marquee both lines (select both) align both in your
alignment panel (shift f7) get your "direct selection" tool select the top
ends of yor 2 lines, hit crtl j, select both the bottom ends with your
"direct sellection" tool hit crtl j. Boom! wavy line box.
