Hi All,

I just upgraded to CS3 Design Premium, and I'm I'm getting the following error when I launch Illustrator:

"The Windows registry was not in the expected state. PLease run the Illustrator installer to correct this problem. Illustrator will continue to run, but may not operate properly."

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 on a dual Xeon workstation with 4GB of RAM. I found the following article in the knowledgebase, but it did not solve the problem:

<http://www.adobe.com/go/kb401602>

I have also uninstalled CS2, reinstalled CS3 and reinstalled CS3 *again*.

Illustrator does run, but it's slow and unstable. Any thoughts on what's going on and what I can do to fix it? Many thanks!

I get the same error on a freshly installed Vista system, with no CS2 or other products ever installed!
I tried reinstalling the Illustrator portion of the suite, but I still get the same error.

You might want to try and do a complete uninstall before running the installer again. Run the uninstaller from the Add/remove programs control panel, and then run the CS3 cleanup script located at the below URL and then try and re-install.

The error message you see only happens when the Application sees a problem with the registry keys but cannot correct the problem.

One way to correct the problem is to uninstall/reinstall, but it is possible that the installer might not be able to correct the situation. Which would be a bug in the installer.

There is a second way to clear this condition, and that is to run the Illustrator application "As Administrator" once. This will give Illustrator the permissions it needs to correct the registry keys and will cause the warning message to disappear on subsequent launches. It is not necessary to always run Illustrator "as administrator"...only once.

You can run Illustrator "As Administrator" by right-clicking on it from the start menu instead of left clicking. A menu will pop up and "Run As Administrator" will be one of the options.

This is a Vista only issue, as under Windows XP, the application has the necessary permissions to correct the issue and the warning will thus never occur. The warning message occurs only when a problem is detected that the applicaiton does not have the permissions to correct.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.
I tried to uninstall, use the CS3 Clean Script, same problem...
I even tried for the heck of it on my laptop with Vista, same problem.

Adam, I tried running illustrator as administrator by right-clicking, as you mentioned, but that doesn't help. I get the same error. Also, I should mention, I am the only user.

Btw, why do the CS3 apps now take SO long to uninstall/install?

On a X2-4600+ dual processor system with 2GB PC3200 ram, it can take over an hour to install CS3, and then another hour to uninstall it.

Same here, running as administrator = no good. Uninstall/reinstall = no good. I wonder if this is a Vista issue? Or a multi-processor issue? Or an x64 issue?

Incidentally, the Illustrator executable seems to be in a weird place:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe

"\Support Files\Contents\Windows\"? What's up with that?

Feckmo, in addition to this "Windows registry was not in the expected state" error with Illustrator, do you find the new CS3 apps take forever to install/uninstall?

Okay, so that didn't work.

If you are up for a bunch of typing, I can tell you how to dig even deeper into this issue and probably fix it.

As I said, Illustrator is complaining that one of the registry keys is not set correctly and apparently, even when "run as administrator", it is not able to correct the situation or something else is interfering with the process.

It is possible for you to run Illustrator in a special "debug" mode that will help both you and me solve the problem for good. You can make Illustrator generate a text file that dumps the specific problems in a human-readable form.

Notice how that Illustrator executable is on a crazy-long path, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe"? To generate that dump file, you need to run Illustrator with a command line option called /DUMPREGINFO.

So...what you need to do is locate specifically where on your machine the Illustrator executable is. Copying that pathname into the clipboard will help.

Launch a command window. Do not change the directory to the Illustrator directory, for you do not have write permissions and any attempt to write a log file there will fail. Instead, type the following at the command line INCLUDING QUOTES:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe /DUMPREGINFO"

Illustrator will run. Almost immediately, you will see the registry warning dialog. And...once that dialog is displayed, you will notice a file called "registryinfo.txt" sitting in your user folder.

I would very much like to get a look at that text file generated on your machine. If you look into the text file yourself, it will describe all of the keys that Illustrator was looking for and what it found in great detail. If you are comfortable using "regedit", then you will be able to repair the problematic keys manually. If you send the text file to me, I will be able to also suggest other measures you might take and could also correct the application if necessary.

Whoops. The command line I mentioned above is incorrect. The double-quotes are in the wrong location and if you type it as I wrote it above, you will get a "The directory name is invalid." error.

The proper form of the command line is:
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe" /DUMPREGINFO

Note that the specific path to the executable may be different on your machine. The path I used here is where the application would reside at a default location on a 32 bit OS installation.

Two things I notice:

The first...the Adobe Swatch Exchange and Photoshop plugin icons appear to be missing. This is what the first three incorrect keys relate to. I know this can happen when you uninstall CS2 after installing CS3, but a repair install of CS3 is known to correct that issue.

The other problem is that NONE of the keys that started with "Adobe.Illustrator.13" have been set. This is very odd and I wonder about the specifics of how you installed the application, or if you were part of the early release program and installed early versions of Illustrator. I don't know how this situation could occur; it is as if the permissions on a registry key got set to something incorrect. You may want to try to uninstall, run the 'cleaner script', then reinstall as Chelan suggested.

Thanks adam for the help.
This is what I get when I run the above reg dump.
Again, this is on a fresh format/install of Vista, with no previous adobe products on my machine. I installing CS3 twice on my machine after fresh installs, and also tried the CS3 Clean script for giggles, and always get the registry warning. The rest of CS3 suite works well, except for Acrobat. But that's another story (acrobat installer keeps launching whenever I right click anywhere in vista LOL).

I have this problem now as well.

I have Vista Home Premium. I have CS2 installed, and then installed CS3. All was fine since the release of CS3 except for today, when I tried to launch Photoshop and I got an error about the license or something. It said uninstall and reinstall, and so I attempted to do that, but...

After uninstalling, and attempting the first re-install, everything with the exception of Acrobat failed to re-install. I had read a document that said to get rid of the Windows\System32\Macromed directory. I did that, and still couldn't get an install to work. I used the clean script after installing the Microsoft uninstall util as directed by the adobe clean uninstall script.

Now the re-install finally worked, but Illustrator alone gives me exactly the errors listed above.

I don't know what is going on with adobe but I have to say, I wasted my Sunday since 9:00AM working on this and it is now 2:26PM. It's very frustrating that Adobe has no tech support via the phone on a Sunday, and even more upsetting when I hear things like, we've never seen this before. As someone who has had 9 years as a field tech, I can tell you the ones who say that are the clueless. I had a perfectly running system yesterday, and now chaos. I don't like this one bit.

Adobe, you need to fix this. You need to do more testing, or write a reg.key we can install. I don't care what it is, just do it. It's your software, and I think we're entitled to some answers. Don't leave this to us to solve. we're not the developer, you are. We paid you good money for software that is flakey, and frankly it's enough.

You got a few people here with the same problems on different machines. That sounds like your problem, not anything we did. You see the reg key, and you know what they should look like. So why not write a reg.key we can install with the proper default settings? You don't have a single software engineer that can do this? Come on. Think creatively, and get us a solution.

We've done the lame suggestions of re-booting, and re-installing. Time to actually think for a living and get us some real answers that actually work.

Best,

Not resolved, no.

The installer is supposed to create all of these registry keys. Obviously it is not. Some folks have a few missing registry keys; some folks have a great deal of missing keys. There are some interesting commonalities between the missing keys, but nothing that says to me what is actually wrong.

Running the application "As Adminstrator"...which requires running it via a special menu command...should also fix up these keys automatically. Obviously that is not working for some folks.

Which leaves me with nothing but questions. It is as if something deep within the bowels of Vista Permissions has gone horribly wrong. There must be an additional factor, as I have not seen problems like this on any clean (or even dirty) Vista installation.

The only good news I can offer is that even with these missing registry keys, Illustrator will generally run correctly. Some icons for some files may not appear correctly in Windows Explorer. Double-clicking an ".ai" file from Windows Explorer may not open it in Illustrator...but Illustrator would still be able to open files via Drag-and-Drop and via the standard File->Open window.

Just installed illustrator CS3 myself, and I'm having the problem too. I didn't even own illustrator CS2!

I'm running a Velocity Micro E120 with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 Gigs of RAM, and running Windows Vista Ultimate. Nothing seems to make it work. I've run two full installs, one uninstall, and at least 3 repair installs.

forget it Adobe! Your So-called "solution" isn't working! Sit your ass down and come up with one that does!(like, today!!!)

Anyone here have any answers? I was up all night trying to fix this!

I'm having the exact same problem on a CS3 Master install on Vista Ultimate. No icons are displayed correctly and I too, am having the Acrobat installer pop up every time I right click anything. All of the correct file associations are showing up in Bridge, but not in the Default Programs menu (Vista Control Panel). When I run regedit to see the file associations, they are there, but all the registry keys for Adobe file types are locked with an "Access is Denied" error message. This has been the most difficult install that I've ever encountered. No less than 6 full installs/uninstalls, numerous registry edits, multiple runs of Adobe's cleaner script, running vista in diagnostic or selective startup. All in all, I've got about 20 - 30 hours invested just trying to get the suite installed. And now that I do, I've got no file associations or icons, and the Acrobat installer is more than just a minor nuisance. I'm absolutely amazed at how poorly Adobe has done with this problem. The forums are rife with install problems, regardless of operating system or Adobe product version. I've been pulling my hair out for the better part of a week trying to get it resolved. This install is in a production setting that is costing money and time for every hour that it's not up and running. For the cost of the Suite and the hype surrounding it, it seems like we should not be having these kinds of problems. This seems more like beta software was rushed to RTM just to get it on the shelves. Has anyone successfully resolved the problems in this thread? Has anyone from Adobe acknowledged that this is not just an isolated problem, and if so, is a fix on the way?

I'm thinking of finding that law firm that handled the iPod battery problem, and showing them this thread. We have asked what you have asked for over a month, and Adobe has not done anything to resolve this.

I don't like yakking about lawsuits, but Adobe took our money, and didn't deliver a working product, and I am as frustrated as you no doubt are. And I seriously want payment for my lost time. In fact, if anyone knows the law firm that handled that Apple case, please submit it. I am making a PDF of this entire thread, and plan to submit it for consideration.

Best,

Alex

Found one of the law firms that handled the battery issue against Apple.

Girard Gibbs LLP

<http://www.girardgibbs.com/contact.asp>

Adobe doesn't seem to want to help us at all. I suggest you send these guys your story, as that will get them into action, which will hopefully get Adobe to take this seriously.

I just filled out their contact form with a brief description of the problems we're having. I offered to show them this entire thread. I live in San Francisco, and this firm is right downtown. So I can go in there and talk to them face to face no problem if I have to. But I have sent them my complaint. Honestly folks, we've all waited more than a month and not even got a single word from Adobe. I think it would be best if everyone having the problem would submit to that firm. If they see a little bit of folks coming forward, perhaps it will become interesting, otherwise, I think we are simply going to lose more and more time over this.

Adobe could handle this so much better, and won't do it. It's very frustrating that they don't reply to us.

I have the same dialog message popping up too and thankfully AI CS3 13.01 (DP) still runs in the end but loads horribly slow. I really hope the next patch (13.0.2) would finally resolve this issue as I don't even want to touch Vista's registy settings just for this.

Any news on an installer/uninstaller patch for CS2 on Vista?

I guess I am lucky in that my Illustrator works, but I have just put down CS3 on top of CS2 and now the uninstall for CS2 crashes. I really do not want to be hand editing the registry to get my old versions of Photoshop and Illustrator off my disk, but I also don't want to leave them their bloating up the disk.

No....I am still getting same Error message. This is the
second or is it third update since release and this problem
has still not been addressed....just not good enough.
I have the suite and have many niggly bugs with every
program in it...this one being the least of a problem.

My problem is solved. The registry keys existed, but did not get permissions properly set.

In my case, the problem was with

Registry key validated: Adobe.Illustrator.EPS\shell\edit\command
Registry key validated: Adobe.Illustrator.EPS\shell\edit

I opened regedit, went to these keys and when I clicked on them, lo and behold, I lacked permission to view them.

Right click on the key, choose properties, OK to the warning, go to ownership, select administrators or everyone or whatever (I have UAC off, so administrators works for me), apply, then add the user to permission for full control to the registry key.

I used the registry solution above (see post #38) and reapplied the patch and mine has been fixed. That should solve your association issue as well.
