Some fonts have built-in characters that overprint the previous character.

But you can always use negative kerning and baseline shift to get any two characters to overprint each other at any desired horizontal and/or vertical offset.

sounds good, thanks - but what is "negative kerning and baseline shift"? My Illustrator is in german, so I can't find it through help system.

Could you copy the text from help system here in forum?

Harry:

Are those "mathematical symbols" part of the Symbols font? What about getting a maths-specific symbol font which includes what you need? Go here and see what's available: <http://www.myfonts.com>

On the Character palette (Window>Type>Character) the item below the Font Size item is called Kerning. The icon looks like "A\V". If you place your type caret between two characters, and enter a value into this field, the characters will move closer together for negative numbers and farther apart for positive characters. The kerning units are proportional to the font size so that if you change the font size you don't have to change the kerning. (They are in 1/1000 of an em, which is a unit square in the font size.)

If you do a Show Options on the Character palette so that the less frequently used options show, the bottom item looks like an A with a superscripted a. This is the "Baseline Shift" attribute. (If you hold the mouse over the icon it shows the name of the item.) The Baseline Shift units are in points or whatever units you are using for Font Size, so if you change your font size you will need to change the baseline shift.
