my fonts preview are not working. Yes I am using the character palette. And yes, font preview is checked in preferences. Tried to reinstall the entire cs4, still nothing! (I also wanted to get my pixel blender filters to work is photoshop thats why I reinstalled the whole thing)

which leads me to another question, how do i completely clean removed illustrator, registry and all, as if I never installed it ever?

The issue you are experiencing is 99% unrelated to any install procedures I dare say. You simply have a "bad" font somewhere and/or something is messing up font names and font family grouping. Hence Adobe programs cannot correctly generate previews. The only other thing might be a completely messed up PDF library that in part is also used for rasterization of text. Anyway, as a first step, look for any instances of AdobFnt.lst files and remove them. Rebuilding them might be enough to get the previews working. And as for making it "as if it never happened" - no way. If you have not used any Registry backup tools, there will always be references to Adobe components. At best you can hope to get rid of orphaned entries after an uninstall using CCcleaner and similar tools. Otherwise a full system re-install is the only way to get a clean Registry.

Turn off Enable Missing Glyph Protection in the Type preferences should fix it.

Font previews don't appear on the Character panel. They only appear on the Type/Font menu.

WOw you're joking! I swear I could view fonts in character palette. Maybe just faulty memory from using indesign so much lately. Im tempted to install illustrator cs2 to makes sure.
character palette preview:

Indesign yes
photoshop yes
flash yes
illustrator: no WHAT??
