When I exit Illustrator 10, I get the following message:

Adobe Illustrator: Illustrator.exe - Application Error. The instruction at "0x04756220" referenced memory at "0x044f431C." The memory could not be "read." Click on OK to terminate the program.

I've reinstalled the program -- with Adobe tech support's guidance -- many times, without success. My WinXP PC is brand-new, with 1GB of memory. I believe my scratch disk is set up correctly.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance...
Kerry

Kerry,

It is probably due to a driver problem. Most likely culprit is the video
driver, but any peripheral driver could be responsible. Many new machines
ship with less than current drivers., and it is always worth checking the
websites of all your peripheral manufacturers for the most current drivers
for your O/S

I got a similiar problem. I was working on a file (trying to remember to 'save' frequently) when I got "YOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING ILLEGAL" (I wait for the police to burst through my door shouting 'freeze!') and then this box that said "Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains an incomplete or garbled object description. Offending operator: "XP"%42000000000000000000000000342050542E2050524553532E2" When I closed the box the program shut down and when I went back into the file (muttering prayers that I pressed 'Ctrl S' recently) I found that I had lost all 'layers' except the bottom three!!?? This had nothing to do with the order in which I did my work and when I hit 'save' it treated what was left of the file as if it were a new file. I clicked off the 'Save-as' box and closed hoping that something else will happen but nothing did so I just repeated my work on top of that old file. When I clicked 'save' I typed in my old file name and it (my computer) said that that file already existed and do I want to go over what already exists. I clicked 'yes' and did things all over again. What happened? and should I have created another file?.........Trevor

Trevor:

Yes. You should not mess with corrupt files. Yes. Your file was corrupt (this the error message) and you should Copy and Paste everything to a new file and do a Save As to a new name and location. That's assuming it Opens.

Even now, I recommend you Select All, Copy and ... as above.
