Illustrator V10.0.3 I have a compound path and want to use it for Envelope Distort - Make with top object and get: This requires a selection of multiple objects. The top object must be a single path or mesh. How do I convert my compound shape into a single path/mesh?

Rekease the compound path Object>Compund Path>Release or I think on a PC it is Control+Alt+8 then keep the shapes selected and use the Pathfinder the first button while holding down the Alt key that will unite all the shapes in what was your compound path into one path.

Rob I think J.C. wants to either make it a single path or a mesh.

Thanks Wade.

J.C., you cannot turn a compound path into a single path. You can release the compound path by going Object > Compound path > Release.
