How can I set my default stroke weight to .002 inches in Illustrator 9? It now defaults to .01". Every time I make a stroke, I have to change it to .002; then the next stroke I make, it's back to .01. I understand that Illustrator sometimes shows .01 when it is actually creating smaller line weights but that is not what is happening here as the next line is visibly much thicker until I again change the weight to .002".

I would suggest changing your measurement system preferences to points for stroke. This will allow you better control.

0.002 inches would work out to be .15 points.

Don's units are a good idea for fonts and line weight, I also like some "Real" Units for the general scale, I use the milimeters scale. This gives me a higher level of accuracy with units that makes sense in the real world and can be seen in the dialog boxees of Ilustrator. You can set Your General units in the general preferances to mm and still write in the dialog box in inches, Illustrator will do the unit conversion on the Fly, write 0.002 in and illustrator will conver to 0.51 mm

Amplified,

Can you explaine? Do you mean you don't have anything smaller than 1 pt? Are you sure your Preferences has Stroke set to points? What happens if you write in a less than 1 pt number?

Hi Bob,

In the pull down menu there are options 0.75, 0.5 and 0.25, but when I select one of these it jumps back to 1. Choosing a higher number is no problem. When I type in a number smaller then 1 manually I get an alert 'invalid nummuric value'. I am absolutely sure I selected points for the stroke in my preferences

Jurgen,

Not only can I choose any of the below 1 point listings, but I can write in any particular decimal number as well. If you write in a decimal number that should respond too. What happens if you trash your AIPrefs file?

Man, Bob, Why can't they just make a more robust aiprefs?

I clearly see a quicker deterioration in the aiprefs file (Have to trash it more frequently) when I'm doing complex stuff and/or I freeze up the comp with Illustrator open...

Jurgen,

You know I don't have any idea as to what is blowing the AIPrefs away so much for you. You know, I've only had to replace my AIPrefs once in last four versions of Illustrator. Either I'm an easy user on the program or something running on other systems is causing it that I don't run (which I think probably is the actual fact). I run a plain, but robust, vanilla Windows machine (95, 98, ME, XP in time sequence).

"(which I think probably is the actual fact)"

I have to side with Bob on this, I've had to delete mine 2 times in the last 2 years. Both times I had a collection of apps open that have a history with me for freaking out illustrator.

Bob, Ben,

what do you mean by trashing the AI Preferences? How can I do this?

I can't think of any app that is causing this problem. I had the problem in AI 9, when I recently installed AI 10, the stroke problem was there from the beginning. I run XP and the quite a few multimedia apps like Adobe PS, After Effects, Ill, Macromedia Flash and Director, Cinema 4D,

You advise I remove these (and other apps) one at the time to see the effect on AI?

thanks Jurgen

Jurgen,

Your Illustrator preference file is named: "AIPrefs". It's a hidden system file found in your C:\Documents & Settings\"yourusername"\Application Data\Adobe\Illustrator\AIPrefs Delete that file (with Illustrator closed). Next time you open Illustrator your AIPrefs file will be rebuilt with original Adobe defaults.

It's a strange issue. I support about 200 art stations that have all been imaged from the same CD. In effect each station is an exact clone of the next. There have been a few (That have come to my attention) where deleting the preferences was needed for one reason or another, right after they were installed. The only issue is that each user whould have their own personal profile (Win2K). So, the aiprefs are being writen for every user the first time they open and close AI. The good news is that it's a file that can be copied. So, after getting things they way you like it, make a backup. You never know when a full moon on Wednesday will cause the prefs to fail...

I too have had to kill my prefs file about 4 times in version 10.02. That versus 0 times in 9 and 8.

Well, now I keep a backup of the file, and just overwrite it when it goes bad.

Don't forget there are two more files that you should copy and archive and that's "Adobe Illustrator 10 Prefs_CMYK.ai" and "Adobe Illustrator 10 Prefs_RGB.ai". Especially if you have made custom Brushes or Swatches in them.
