Several months ago there was a lively discussion about Bar Codes. I remember somebody mentioning an on line place to order bar codes for a small fee.

I need to put a bar code on a store coupon. The bar code needs to buzz at the scanner just to fool the customers into thinking there is some control over the coupons. Any help or advice appreciated.

...emencz, if I remeber right, the 9th version of CorelDraw had a Bar Code Wizard or something like this included in the package. Do you have someone with Corel Draw next to you?

I have Corel Draw 8 and nobody useful next to me. These people have a bar code printer (I assume as they're a supermarket). Would I just be able to scan a bar code they provide and be on my way? Sorry about my stupid question, but I'm really new to this.

emencz, I think you could give it a try. Tho it probably should be a really good scan, or a good handmade trace...

Alexander,

CorelDraw has full bar codes, no need to scan them to get the codes. They apply their Bar Code Wizard to establish them in the format of choice from several listed. It includes the options for bar height and adjustments also.

You'll need a REALLY good scan or a handmade trace. OR if they can provide you with a physical sample, just get a decent scan of it and send it to me & I can gen you up an EPS with my barcode software. It's always best to have the customer provide a sample of what they want, if you just use generic numbers it can really hose a POS terminal.

And it's not a stupid question, you'd be surprised at how little people actually know about barcodes.

Yep, Bob, I know. Have used it once. But only once, to be honest :)

Amen, Ben. You're absolutely right :)

Okay, I scanned it. I brought it into Photoshop (that's where I designed the coupon). When printed it's a bit smudgy. Is that terrible news?

It may or may not be, the real test would be to take it to someone with a barcode scanner and test it. or if you like, you can crop out the barcode portion from the coupon, e-mail it to me, and I'll let you know if it can scan.

Testing, testing one...two...three... It's working, but barely. Thanks for all your help, Ben and Alex.

I remember ,Ben, you were also part of this very lively bar code discussion many moons ago.

I have to learn to do this thing, but there's so much to learn as is.

Glad I could be of service a little bit. Seriously, barcodes are what keep a roof over my head and food in my stomach. The fundamentals of them aren't really an Illustrator topic, so if you ever have questions, feel free to shoot me an e-mail. I'll help where I can.

Emencz, and anyone needing barcodes-

Yes, CorelDraw Eight has a barcode wizard that does a great job creating them as long as you know the base numeral code, or have an existing one to go off of. I do alot of package design, so I use the barcode generator and then paste into Illustrator. If anyone needs a barcode generated, I can provide you an EPS to drop into your Illustrator file. Just send me a copy of the barcode you're trying to create, or the numeral code and the type of barcode you need. I'll only charge $40 per code needed.

The site is www.snx.com and I believe they charge $15 for a bar code. They
also make Bar Code Pro which is a really good barcode generator. CorelDRAW's
barcode program is based on Bar Code Pro but is a little buggy and doens't
have as many options although you probably don't need as many.

just for the record, I never said I'd charge.

Marks suggestion is good too, if you find that you only need 1 maybe 2 barcodes a year, snx is a great affordable way to go. I however am not 100% sold on their Bar Code Pro, seems like too high a price for just generating a barcode. Unless of course you do more than 20 or 30 a year then the price is somewhat justified.

One can purchase the basic UPC/EAN bar code fonts from ID Automation/BizFonts for $139. That's not out of line if, as Ben suggests, you make sufficient use of the fonts. (You can download a free utility from BizFonts to calculate check digits and create the necessary text strings to use with the bar code fonts.) Go to...

<http://www.bizfonts.com>

They offer other font packages, and I think their prices are fair:

That is a great reference, and I agree, they have some of the fairest prices for barcode fonts. Which brings up another good point. IMHO the second best way to learn about the fundamentals of barcodes is to use font sets, Simply for the fact you have to input each character including the start & Stop characters and for those codes that need it, figuring out the check digits. Discecting the code in the app Harron mentioned will give tons of knowledge on the subject.

That was sweet of you, Ben. But business is business, and I don't like taking advatage of people if I don't really have to. BTW, what is you email address? did not find it in your profile.

SNX is what I need until I get to learn more about bar codes.

About Corel Draw 8 and bar code wizard: I cannot find it. Are you sure Corel Draw 8 has this feature?

Thank you all for the help!

LOL...I didn't realize I had it hidden :)
It's visable now.

I do agree business is business, but from my point of view, I don't feel generating one or two barcodes for someone is worth charging, it literally takes less than 5 minutes on my end. Where I charge, is helping people create barcode solutions to help facilitate product tracking solutions. The actual barcode creation is only like .01% of that.

for Windows version of AI-10
The simplest way I know to place a barcode in almost any program is by
using a barcode font. A free barcode font can be downloaded from the
following site:

http://208.50.222.163/faq2/barcode.html

Load this true type font (3of9.ttf) into your font folder and you will
be able to choose it from a drop down list in AI. Always sandwich
whatever characters you want in the barcode between a pair of
asterisks. Typing this *ABC1234* in a normal font and then
highlighting it and changing it to the barcode font with a size of say
28, will produce a readable barcode.

Mac Barcoda was a small Mac applet -- and a great one, too. (You typed in the digits, and the app calculated the checksum and saved out an Illustrator-compatible vector file.) Is that the one you're thinking of?

I've never seen anything like it for Windows.

I used to use an app called Barcoda that generated .eps files. I can't seem find it anymore but this place has some good resources.
