I just got Illustrator. I've tried repeatedly to take a CorelDraw 8 graphic file from the CorelDraw disc and place it into Illustrator 10. I use Windows XP pro. Whether I use "file, open" or "file, place" or double-click on the file I want to open, I get the same message. "doesn't recognize the .cdr format.

Any help would be appreciated. My project that requires the use of this program is due in 2 days!

Smiles,
Carolyn

Is that file cdr extension?

Some clipart from Corel, or examples, use other format (such cmx), that Illustrator cannot open.

Yes, it is a .cdr extension. When I read the help section for Illustrator, it said that it could import .cdr extension files.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Carolyn

Carolyn:

Although it has the extension .CDR, those files may well be compressed clip art which are NOT the same. If you open the files with CorelDRAW! and re-save as .CDR they may open. I'd recommend saving as .EPS, however, since that will work.

Ian, she is taking the file from a Corel CD, she cannot save it as EPS.

Yes she can if she, "... open[s] the files with CorelDRAW! and re-save as ..." as I suggested.

Carolyn has Corel Draw?

I thought CorelDraw disc was the clipart CD, not the software one.

The .cdr clipart included with Corel's latest versions is compressed and, as Ian stated, can ONLY be opened in CorelDraw. But if it's saved by CorelDraw, it's saved in standard .cdr format and THAT can be opened by Illustrator (one version back). Illustrator 10 cna open CorelDraw 9's .cdr and so on).

Hi everyone,

What a great response from all of you! I have all of the CDs that came with CorelDraw 8 but haven't installed the program because I was concerned that it wouldn't be compatible with Windows XP pro. I just installed Windows XP about 3 weeks ago and it's been a nightmare. A lot of compatibility problems with software and hardware.

Do any of you have any experience with CorelDraw 8 on Windows XP? Maybe it would be safe to go ahead and install Corel. However, I purchased Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator because they WOULD be compatible. Illustrator had very little clip art with it and had none that would work with my project, that's why I'm trying to import .cdr files into Illustrator.

Maybe you know of a better source of clipart in AI.

Very grateful for all of your help,
Carolyn

Carolyn:

Many Users here have both applications installed and working fine. I have those both under Win2k but I believe Bob has them running in WinXP also without problems.

Carolyn, a friend of mine use Corel with Windows XP without any problem.

I think Corel is a problem, no matter the OS.

Carolyn, if you can tell me which graphic from the CD you need, I'll convert it to EPS and put it on my web site for you.

Again, you've all been great. I didn't expect so many responses. Thanks.

Daniel Pallotta, I'd like to take you up on your offer to convert a corel graphic to EPS for me. There are two I need -- Bills001 and Bills026 -- both in the Money category. If you can only post one, I'd prefer Bills001.

You are all my "valentines." Carolyn
