can i fix this problem?
How many fonts do you have installed and active? (Remember roman, bold and italic are three fonts) What type of fonts are you using? How were they installed? Are you running ATM? What exact version? Have you checked all your fonts to see if any are corrupt? Do you have two sets of fonts with a separator line? Have you applied the 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 patches?
This is a well documented problem with some ttf fonts with poor encoding.
You can identify the problem fonts in Illustrator: they're all below the
line at the bottom of the font list. This should help:
Exit out of Illustrator
Find the file called 'AdobeFnt.lst'. In W98 it's in \program files\common
files\adobe\TyepSpt; I don't know where it is on other OSs.
Open the file in WordPad. You'll notice that under each font is a field
called 'WritingScript'. It should show 'Roman', but the problem fonts often
show 'EastEuropeanRoman'.
Use find/replace to remove all instances of 'EastEuropean' (leave the
'replace with' field blank).
Save the file and change its properties to 'read only'. You'll need to
remove the read-only status temporarily each time you install further fonts.
I have a link to the file on my desktop to make the whole thing easier.
You could also read document #324032 on the Adobe techdocs database.
Hope this helps

This is a problem specific to Illustrator 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 running on Windows 98 or ME.
The problem doesn't occur in Illustrator 9.0 or 10, and it doesn't occur on Windows NT or 2000.

Thanks; I didn't know it was so specific. But it's a hard problem to solve if you don't know where to start looking.
And I should have said every time you activate (not install) further fonts.
Cheers
