Does anyone know why I can't use the add-anchor point tool in Illustrator 8.0?

If I use the pen tool to draw a straight line, and then use the add anchor-point tool to try to add another point anywhere on the path, I get the following error message:

"Can't add an anchor-point. Please use the add anchor-point tool on a segment of a path"

A friend of mine has Illustrator 9.0, and there is no problem using the add-anchor point with that version. If anyone can figure out why this is happening, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can post a reply, or email me if you like: sst...@yahoo.com

Thanks

Steve,

...can you edit the path with the Direct Selection tool (the white arrow)?

If not, try hitting Ctrl-H (View>Show/Hide Edges) and see if it helps.

Hi Steve,

Are you really using Illustrator 8.0, or is it 8.0.1?

If it's 8.0.1, do you have smart guides activated?

If so, you can either:

Disable Smart Guides, or

Enable Snap to Grid or Snap to Point, or

Upgrade to Illustrator 9 or later (which fixes this Illustrator 8.0.1 bug).

Thanks for the suggestions guys. It turns out that the "Disable Smart Guides" solved the problem. Seems kind of like a hack solution to me, and I guess eventually I'll have to upgrade to 9 or 10, but at least I can draw curves now.

Thanks!
