Hey everyone,

Its been a while since i posted on here :)
well.. now i'm back in illustrator and i have a question

am creating a chinese flyer have a word document that uses SimSun Font - for the chinese characters

when i cut and paste the text into ILL 10 on Win2K and change the font to SimSun - the characters are displayed as question marks... does anyone know why this is and how i can fix it? do i need to install a patch - i'm pretty sure i have the latest download...

Thanks in advance.

Nina,

There are a couple of issues here.

1. Just because the font works in Word does not mean it will work in Illustrator.

2. You cannot copy and paste Asian text from Word into Illustrator.

Presumably, these kinds of problems have been solved in CS with its new text engine. But since you are at 10, you'll have to try some workarounds.

If you have Photoshop 6 or later, or Indesign 2, you should be able to copy and paste into either from Word. Select an appropriate Unicode font before you paste.

You should then be able to copy and paste from PS or ID into IL. Again, select your font in IL before you paste. If SimSun doesn't work, you may have to substitute with a Unicode font, such as Bitstream Cyberbit.

All of this presumes you have the appropriate Asian support for the OS and the apps installed.

I don't know for W2K. Under Win98SE, it was possible to download the necessary foreign language support files via Windows Update. Under WinXPPro, you have to install support files for Asian languages from the OS CD. You can do this via the Regional and Language Options control panel. Under both OS's, you also have the option of installing corresponding IME's (input method editors) that enable you to enter Asian text via a U.S. English keyboard.

I have the feeling the procedure under W2K is similar to that for WinXP, but perhaps someone fluent in W2K can confirm that.

Otherwise, check under Windows help for Asian/foreign language support.
