I was doing an illustration on three different layers. I closed the file and when I opened it back up, all three layers were condensed into one and my fonts were changed into pathsd and my PMS flat colors were changed into CMYK. It was a silkscreen job. Now I have to redo it. What happened?

Timothy,

Are you sure you were working on three separate FULL layers, and not three SUB-LAYERS? If sub-layers, then when you re-open the document you'll only see one full layer, with the arrow indicating the sub-layers which are still there. You can create new FULL layers and drag each sub-layer into it's own layer if you wish. Remember that in verion 10, all objects have their own sub-layer.

Bob Thanks for replying. Yes it was three full layers not the sublayers. Not only did it condense all the layers but it made paths of the fonts, it grouped everything, and knocked on object out of the background shape. (a rectangle became a rectangle with the shape of a sailboat knocked out. I think it has something to do with the message I get sometimes about "This document is being saved outside Adobe Illustrator." But I'm not sure.

Timothy,

This sounds like some Action has been set to take over. What happens if you trash your AIPrefs file?

I did save down to an earlier version. I saved down to Illustrator 8 bnecause the printer does not have 10. Thanks a lot. I think that is the mystery solved.
