I'm trying to find a way to manipulate Asian characters (Chinese- Trad. and Simplified, Japanese and Korean) in Illustator.

I am being sent Asian text in 'Word' format from my client (e.g. the word 'Japanese' in Japanese etc.) and these need to be manipulated as vector files...(in Flash etc) so I need some way of getting the text into Illustrator for manipulation.

I've been told to try a package called 'CJK Partner V3.0 for Windows' which is made by TwinBridge Software Corp. but I'm not sure this will allow me to paste the text into Illustrator using the correct fonts.

I'm sure this is a common problem with anyone dealing with foreign design issues, but I don't seem to be having much joy finding an answer.

Does anyone have a simple solution??? Please???

Johnkins:

Illustrator does NOT support Unicode fonts like those found in office applications. Some Windows TrueType fonts (e.g., Arial and Times New Roman) contain an extended character set, which includes subsets of characters required by Western, Central European, Eastern European, Greek and Turkish languages. You can make these subsets available by installing Multilanguage Support in Windows. These font subsets appear as separate font listings in supported applications (e.g., WordPad or Adobe PageMaker). Illustrator uses only the Western default character sets, however.

For a list of foreign language versions of Illustrator go here: http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/languages.html <http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/languages.html>

Ian and John:

I'm having the same problem. I can read Simplified Chinese in Photoshop with no problems at all. I can read Traditional Chinese in Illustrator using the NJStar Viewer and the font PMingLiu. But I can't get Illustrator to read Simplified Chinese, even with the correct viewer setting and the correct font (SimHei).

Is there a solution out there for us, working for international companies?? I would think so - it seems strange to me that Adobe wouldn't be regionally flexible and that we'd have to purchase another version of Illustrator with a different language interface (which doesn't make sense for English-speakers) to make it work.
