Hi all,

I have an Illustrator 9.0 file which gives me an Offending Operator message when i try and open it: the error reads as follows:

Offending Operator: 'Tf'

1 0 0 1 1092.959 -500.8428 0 Tp
0 Tv
TP
0 Tr
0,3333 0.8235 0.9569 0.2549 (Marrone) 0 x
/_21.5456 0 0 Tf

The file will open but half the layers are missing! Can anyone help me at all? Please !

Marriella,

If you do a search for Offending Operatoryou will find numerous post on how to fix various forms of this problem.

However there maybe a way for you to open the file in a more intuitive way which is to create a new blank AI document and then go to File>Place and select the file in question. Often times placing it in AI will work and you will have all your layers. This does not work all the time but it is definitley worth a try.

Oh, yes if you are successful in placing the file resave it as an AI file with a different name. Then you will more than likely be able to open it normally.

Good luck.

Hi! Everyone - I have a similar Offending Operator message but mine reads as follows:
Can't open the illustration. The illustration does not have the correct number of operands for an operator. Offending operator: "C"
Context:
688.7119 -127.9492 692.333 -126.7637 691.6504
-123.4907 C
692.333 -126.7637 696.7334 -127.0713 700.2097
-1210049 C
and I got the same result as Marriella - The file will open but some layers are dumped and not all the data appears. Do think this is the same type of problem? I'll give the File-Place in a new AI document a try. What is an operand anyway? Please help! Thanks! Ann

-1210049 C sounds like an awfully large number. Are you sure it's not -121.0049 C? Perhaps all you need to do is restore a missing decimal point (using a text editor like BBEdit).

If the place method doesn't work, go to Illustrator FAQ and follow the instructions given for "recovering corrupt files". The first step in those instructions is rather skeletal, so feel free to ask if you are unsure how to extract "roundtrip information".

Heres my problem
What if the problem file is an illustrator eps though it flattens everything when its placed?

Got a similar thing -- mine is XI. And it's happened to a bunch of my documents. Any ideas how to not only fix these files but prevent this from happening in the future?

Thanks Richard - I suspect you are right. The actual number is -121.0049C however the decimal does not show up in the error message. The number was broken over two text lines and looked like this:
-121
0049C
so I could not quite tell if the decimal was there or not. I will try the Illustrator FAQ as you suggested. Also, for everyone experiencing this, I am wondering if there is a common thread here. The file on which this happened to me is very complex. A lot of layers, blends, gradients, effects and filters etc. The file size is about 30MB. (Oh, by the way I am still in Illustrator 9.0.2) - Do think this is maybe a memory problem? Not enough RAM to handle it all? Ann
