In AI 10.0.3 on OS X 10.2.4 I save a file as a PDF on the default setting and yes the embed all fonts is checked but when I open the file in Acrobat Reader all the fonts drop. I've tried saving back as a 4.0 PDF but get the same problem. What gives ? Any insight would be great. I thought mabey bad fonts but we just got Adobe's font Folio so I know these are clean fonts. I use Font Reserve as my font management app. Any help would be great. Thanks. Dave.

It happens sometimes when font licensing issues are involved.Which font are you using?

I wonder if Font Reserve is causing this because Adobe's fonts normally permit embedding.

Since I've posted this I've noticed my problem is very sporadic. For instance I use tekton for my title block on all my comps. However when I open my saved PDF it somtimes is there and other times it looks like Myriad. I've been in contact with the font reserve people and they say they have never herd of this and feel it's an adobe issue. I'm not so sure.
What exactly is font licensing ? I don't appear to have any duplicate fonts at the moment.

Are you activating fonts before you launch Illustrator? I know they are supposed to update automatically, but sometimes Illustrator just doesn't get the message.

As for the "font licensing issue", I think M F is referring to a security bit in fonts that can be set to disallow embedding. It is rarely set and would definitely not cause inconsistant results. I also think you would get a warning when saving as PDF.

Yes I generally have a select group of fonts turned on permentlly. At the moment I'm re-installing Font Reserve and reloading all my fonts. So well se what happens.

Here is what you need to do - remove the Font Reserve Plug-in for Illustrator, it does not work! Then again I'm on a Mac and using Font Reserve Server. With this hardware and software, the Plug-in does not work. When I had it installed, my fonts would be automatically activated, but I would not have access to them.
You need to make sure the Font Reserve preference for substituting fonts is not active. Then when you open an Illustrator 10 document, a dialog box will appear listing the missing fonts. At this point you can go to your Font Reserve window and active the fonts.
Also note, if you activate a font, use it in a document, then deactive it, you will not be able to use it again until you clear the memory cache by restarting your computer. An error message will appear saying there is a conflict with a system font.
This problem maybe why you can not embed some fonts, because you do not have access to them. You need a set of permenently active fonts!
And when you manually active fonts, do not deactivate them. Illustrator plug-in's problem is in the activation and deactivation of the fonts. It sometimes, leaves the fonts in your memory cache and will not be able to activated them again and will substitute the font - which you do not want to happen. There are many issues with Illustrator and Font Reserve, and each of the companies blame the problem on the other company's software.
QuarkXPress works fine with Font Reserve!
Hope this confusing mess helps alittle!

Do you think this could be a problem with the Suitcase auto activation plug-in as well? I have the same problem, also seemingly sporadic, but I'm using Suitcase instead of Font Reserve.

I have now removed the Suitcase plug-in and I'll see if that fixes it.

I have also removed the auto-activate plugin for Suitcase 10.2.1 from Illustrator 10.0.3 in OS X 10.2.4 (whew! Thassalotta tens!), and HOORAY!! the not embedding problem is gone!

Now, I have noticed that I have to quit Suitcase after permanently adding the required fonts and then log out and then back in; otherwise, Suitcase doesn't remember that the fonts are open (yes, I repaired permissions). Weird, but it works for me.

Have also noted that opening, closing and printing files are MUCH faster!
