Here is what you need to do - remove the Font Reserve Plug-in for Illustrator, it does not work! Then again I'm on a Mac and using Font Reserve Server. With this hardware and software, the Plug-in does not work. When I had it installed, my fonts would be automatically activated, but I would not have access to them.
You need to make sure the Font Reserve preference for substituting fonts is not active. Then when you open an Illustrator 10 document, a dialog box will appear listing the missing fonts. At this point you can go to your Font Reserve window and active the fonts.
Also note, if you activate a font, use it in a document, then deactive it, you will not be able to use it again until you clear the memory cache by restarting your computer. An error message will appear saying there is a conflict with a system font.
This problem maybe why you can not embed some fonts, because you do not have access to them. You need a set of permenently active fonts!
And when you manually active fonts, do not deactivate them. Illustrator plug-in's problem is in the activation and deactivation of the fonts. It sometimes, leaves the fonts in your memory cache and will not be able to activated them again and will substitute the font - which you do not want to happen. There are many issues with Illustrator and Font Reserve, and each of the companies blame the problem on the other company's software.
QuarkXPress works fine with Font Reserve!
Hope this confusing mess helps alittle!
