You can save an Illustrator file as EPS or as PDF. What are you looking for?

I need to make pdfs with distiller as opposed to save as pdf. Save as pdf makes weird things happen with clipping masks and fonts don't always embed. So I need to save a load of files saved as eps so I can run them through distiller all at once. Each eps file is about 300mbs so you can imagine how long 35 files will take to save! Hence I need a 'save as eps' script!

How about a batch action? Try the below..

1. Create a new folder named "AI Files," and then place the files you want to convert in that folder.
2. Create a second new folder named "Converted Files."
3. In Illustrator, open one of the files you want to convert.
4. Choose New Action from the Actions palette pop-up menu.
5. Name the new action, and click Record.
6. Choose File > Save As.
7. Choose either EPS or PDF from the Format pop-up menu (Mac OS) or the Save As Type pop-up menu (Windows).
8. Name the file, and then save it in the Converted Files folder.
9. Choose Stop Recording from the Actions palette pop-up menu.
10. Select the action in the Actions palette.
11. Choose Batch from the Actions palette pop-up menu.
12. In the Source section, deselect Override Action "Open" Commands and Include All Subdirectories, and then click Choose.
13. Navigate to the AI Files folder, and then click Choose (Mac OS) or OK (Windows).
14. In the Destination section, choose Folder from the pop-up menu, deselect Override Action "Save In" Commands and Override Action "Export" Commands, and then click Choose.
15. Navigate to the Converted Files folder, and then click Choose (Mac OS) or OK (Windows).
16. Click OK.

Dear Chelan,
Thx for these instructions as I have been trying for ages to do similiar conversions following the Adobe User Guide instructions, with no success. My batch output result was ONE file named as per the recorded action 'save' or 'save as' command. I noted my file was overwritten may times as per the number of files in the folder.
I think the naming in step 8 should be clarified. When recording the 'save' or 'save as' you MUST type in a new unique file name when recording the action and not accept the default highlighted name in the filename box.
Why? You will end up with the above result. Note that the converted files will include one additional file, compared to the original batch. This file will have the unique name given to the file in the 'save' or 'save as' when the action was recorded.
I haven't checked but I don't think Photoshop requires a new name when recording as I haven't run across this issue in PS.

I note that your instructions do NOT follow the instructions under the tip (lightglobe) on page 396 of the User Guide, where it states to record a Close command and choose None for the Destination Batch. Any reasons why?

THANK YOU for posting a reply to the original question as I now have the remainder of the weekend free!
regards
