can't use "edit original" link

i'm unable to use the "edit original" feature from the "links" menu. (it is grayed out; online documentation does not elaborate on using this feature.) im using illustrator 9.0 for macintosh. images are jpgs and tiffs.

use this feature in Indesign. it's so useful...what am i neglecting to do in illustrator?

For the images to be editable in this way, they must be Placed, not embedded. In the Place dialog, make sure “Link” is checked.
