This is a bit of a mystery to me: an overseas company does packaging for Polish using Illustrator and the font GillSans CE. I do the same packaging in InDesign using GillSans CE with no trouble and get all the special Polish characters.

When I open up one of their files in Illustrator none of the Polish characters show up, and I can't find any way to get those characters to appear properly in Illustrator. Their files show substituted glyphs, and Polish text that I import from a Word document puts an underscore instead of the character.

Obviously it's possible to use CE fonts in Illustrator: does anyone know what I need to do to get it to work?

Thank you!!

I take a guess, enable the Polish Keyboard when opening these
files.

A nice thought. I tried enabling it however there was no change in the Polish text. I believe the keyboard menu only has to do with mapping keys on the keyboard to the input of the characters.

Incidentally when I enabled Polish I was able to type the Polish characters into my ICQ window (this is under OSX by the way) however Illustrator would not accept any of the special Polish characters, even though I was typing with a CE font.

It remains stubbornly set against it. Anyone recommend anything else?

I believe it's to do with Illustrator's lack of unicode support. I'm having similar issues with other Eastern European fonts as well. Hopefully this will be fixed in v11.

But obviously there's a way to do it because their Illustrator files contain Polish. Just when I open them up on my computer I get a font warning about different encoding and that characters have been substituted, even though my CE font contains all the required characters. I am wondering what they do on their system to get Polish working.

I mean, are you saying that no one in Poland uses Illustrator to set Polish text? That can't be! Same goes with QuarkXPress: people set books in Polish using it but I can't get it to recognise CE font characters.

So what do people do to their systems to get it to work?
