I created a file saved it and then 10 minutes later it opens a blank page and gives me this error:

Can't open the illustration. The Illustration contains an illegal or misplaced operator offending operator: "C"

What does this mean? Can I fix my file? is it lost forever?

Search the AI Forum for "offending" and "illegal". Also, see Mordy Golding "Recovering Corrupt Files" 12/17/01 2:06pm </cgi-bin/webx?50@@.ef5b7af> Step 1 of Mordy's recovery procedure is thin on detail. Wire us back if you need an explanation. I use BBEdit to edit the Adobe Illustrator 10.0 Prefs file.

I don't know that Mordy' instructions should be the first thing to try.

do this:
1) Make a copy of your file and give it an .eps extension.

2) Create a new file in illustrator

3) go to file>place, select the EPS file, UNCHECK "LINK," then place the file.

see if that works.

You're right -- I forgot about that possible "quick fix". Mordy's instructions should be updated!

THANK you!

I actually got this to work without making an .eps copy..just placed the corrupted .ai file unlinked. A pattern moved around, but the rest was safe! Re-saved as a different name. Sweet!

This worked for my top layer... Is there any way to dig out the rest?
