I am getting an error message in Illustrator 10 when saving files. Error message reads "can't save the illustration. The file is locked or in use." I work on a mac platform. Why is this happening?

If you are trying to place and object(illustration) directly from disc into Illustrator, you will get this error. If this is the case, save the illustration to your hard drive, and then place it into Illustrator. If this isn't your problem, I'm sorry, I don't know how to help you.

If you are working on a server and someone else is has the file open, then it would not be available for any editing or saving.

I used to get that message. I don't anymore and don't know what caused it, but the way I got around it was to save a copy of the file. Go to File>Save a copy. For some reason this worked. It's annoying to have to do this every time, but it's even more annoying not being able to save all that hard work.
