Hello Illustrator CS Users
I know that many of you have had issues with Illustrator CS crashing on you, and we are trying to find resolution to these problems. Currently, we are tracking two separate issues. I am trying to find out information on both of them.
I will outline the issues we need information on below, if possible, can you let me know if you fall into either of the scenarios or if you are having a different problem. You can either post here in this forum or you can email the information to aif...@adobe.com.
Scenario 1
Issue
When launching Illustrator CS on Mac OSX, you receive the error message, "The Application Has Unexpectedly Quit........"
Details
You have a Swatch, Brush, Graphic Style, or Symbol library set as persistent and you have either turned off the Font Preview function, set the Font Preview size to Large, set the Font Preview size to Small, or checked "Show Font Names in English" from the Type and Auto tracing section of the General Preferences.
Solution
Trash the Illustrator preferences to open up Illustrator CS. To stop it from happening again, either change the swatch library from persistent, or change the font preview to "On" with the medium size setting.
Scenario 2
Issue
Error "The Application Has Unexpectedly Quit..." when saving or printing a file in Illustrator CS
Details
This we don't know and need information from users....
* Are you using Norton Antivirus with Autoprotect running? If so, if you disable it does the crashing stop? What version?
* Is there a default printer installed and selected? If not, after you install one, does the crashing stop?
* Does this happen with one file, many files, all files? What about a new file with just a box?
* If the crash happens when saving, is it to the local drive or to a network drive?
* If the crash happens when printing, how is the printer connected to the computer (local, network, wireless network)?
* Did Illustrator ever work? If so, what had changed recently when you started crashing? (new software, etc...)
* Have you tried resetting your permissions? If so, did that help?
* Is your user account Administrator or User?
* Anything else you think might help?
Thank you for your help!

But trashing the Monitor Profile and doing it over did solve my problem. Perhaps you have not found the complete cause and effect. Though I admit I don't quite understand this distinction you are making with regard to File name and Internal name.
Also perhaps it is simply not apparent what the issue is and the information that is given along with the crash reports might be well a bit incomplete so it is difficult to put the info together in a way that points to the real problem. Sometimes people don't want to tell about a certain software they use because they like it and it turns out that is the cause of the conflict.
I know from experience here on the Forum that often it becomes frustrating to assist someone when you give them all the advice that should work and it does not only to find out that they forgot to mention a certain software they use because they did not think that could possibly affect AI.
Also sometimes it is hardware or firmware related as there are many variations with many possible combinations it is possibly no one is alert or willing enough to mention the possibility that they have some attached or installed. I hope you see what I mean.
I understand the information issue completely. My post for the Ilustrator developers was primarily meant as a starting point for discussion, so I haven't yet filled in all the details :) I write calibration software, so I ran into this particular issue, troubleshot and isolated the issue, contacted the Apple ColorSync group since it was related to profiles, and confirmed the issue with them that it was not ColorSync, but Adobe code. Here's the nitty-gritty.
The issue affects Acrobat Distiller. Profiles with short internal names (not file name) will cause Distiller to shut down during launch, but I haven't yet determined just how short the name must be to cause it. My testing involved one and two character file names, which caused the problem. I tested with profiles created by the Apple default calibrator and profiles created with our SuperCal application, and edited existing profiles using a file/hex editor to turn them "bad." I moved the suspect profiles across machines to isolate the problem, and it followed the profile from machine to machine, and went away when removing the profile.
To reproduce the problem on a Mac, open the Apple default calibrator, leave the expert option turned off, step through to the last step, and save the profile with the name "a". Then launch Distiller and see if it shuts down during launch with this profile installed.
I wll post this info to the Acrobat forum since it's most appropriate there, but if Adobe is factoring code well and using it across applications, it could affect Illustrator in some way. Since the AI issues are related to startup and printing, one of these scenarios is the same as when Distiller is shutting down, and one is related to printing which may make use of ColorSync profiles. It's only a hunch, but worth mentioning to these developers.

I had a different issue with a corrupt profile crashing Acrobat 6.0.1 on launch how it got corrupt and the nature of the corruption I do not know however there is good cause to think this is related to the distiller issue and perhaps some of the problems AI CS has seen with some users.

Brock,
I think you are under the assumption that we get the crashlogs that you send off to Apple via the little crashlogger thing? If so, unfortunately that's a bad assumption. We can't get our hands on them for a variety of reasons. If you send the crashlogs into us, then there is a chance that we can do something about them. Several people do send crashlogs regularly to me.
Hi again,
A customer raised an interesting point regarding font management utilities. Of the information that I have seen that has come into me there doesn't seem to be a specific font management utility that is causing issues, but rather I suspect a particular font or fonts.
Has anyone done any specific font troubleshooting for the crashing? Steps are below, but I would be interested in knowing if doing this resolved any of the crashing issues and if so, what font or fonts caused the problem. Since I am unable to recreate the crashing issues, is someone willing to give this a shot and let me know? You can post a response here in the forum or email aif...@adobe.com. Any takers?
A system error can occur if Illustrator accesses a damaged font. You can troubleshoot fonts to determine if they cause the problem:
1. Drag the contents of the Library/Fonts folder to a new folder on the desktop. (If you manually added fonts to the Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts folder, also drag those fonts to the new folder.)
2. At the Finder, choose File > Find.
3. Type AdobeFnt05.lst (Illustrator 10) or AdobeFnt07.lst (Illustrator CS), select the system drive, and then press Return.
4. Delete all AdobeFnt05.lst files found.
5. Restart the computer.
6. Restart Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new AdobeFnt05.lst or AdobeFnt07.lst file.
7. Try to re-create the problem. Then, do one of the following:
-- If the problem doesn't recur, move one font back to the Library/Fonts folder, and then repeat steps 5-7 until you identify the problematic font.
-- If the problem recurs, move the contents of the new folder on the desktop back to the Library/Fonts folder.
Typically I'm saving a CS EPS file to overwrite an older Illustrator EPS file. It seems to happen more often while InDesign is running and less often if nothing else is running.
I'm on a G5 dual 2GHz machine with 512MB of RAM.
Following your advice, I've just turned off NAV autoprotect and that seems to have stopped the problem! I'm even leaving InDesign and several other applications running for added measure, to be sure it isn't the memory problem I suspected.
Christopher...is it switching to Illustrator that's slow, or switching out of Illustrator that's slow (I know you said switching to, but we're only aware of an issue of switching from Illustrator to Photoshop. I just wanted to make sure I had it clear). What do you have on the clipboard when you notice this slow switch. Anything?
Like you, I realize that we don't get crash logs back thru Apple from the crash reporter dialog. Too bad we don't. But, I do always request a crash log from users as retrieved from the Console. I usually lead them thru a short, concise exercise to save the app's log and send the file to me. I'm actually shocked that you guys don't have a short tech note for users to show them how to send you these files (if you do, it's not obvious enough). There's little better than a stack trace that shows exactly where and how the code stopped executing.
Regarding the crashes, I usually only encounter the stalling and crash like Christopher reports. I typically see it when clicking on a tool icon in the toolbar, at which time the button doesn't change state, Illustrator stalls for a couple seconds, the system beachball comes up, and zap, the app's gone. These always show a thread crashing in AGMCarbonLib. Looking at your function names, the stack trace looks like drawing is happening as the result of the click on the toolbar icon, but something goes awry when trying to create some off-screen port for drawing.
I'd move the app to /Applications, but like your comment, I can't really see how that would affect this issue. Other issues maybe, but not likely on this one. I keep some apps separated from Apple's because it makes it much easier to migrate from one system release to another when Apple releases dev seeds. I hate mixing my data/apps with system data/apps, even though you guys do it with your installer (big frown here).
Let me know if you have any ideas on what I can run to help you pinpoint this problem, such as Sampler or other CHUD tools. Seven months of this is driving me crazy. If you're there at WWDC this year, I'm going to find you :)

I was running an iMac(Flat Panel G4-800) with 10.3.4 for Illustrator for the past couple of years. I ran Illustrator 10 and now CS with Suitcase 11. I had my share of crashes but CS seemed to work fine and treated me ALOT better than Illustrator 10 so I was happy. I recently upgraded to a 1.8 GHz G5 and did a clean install of Illustrator CS, this gave me the opportunity to figure out if there were specific things I was doing that were causing the crashing. First off let me just get this off my chest... Illustrator CS is freaking FAST on my G5 compared to my iMac(but that probably goes without saying). I cannot stress how much nicer it is to open and save files. Also I've been using Suitcase the entire time and X1 works like a charm with CS. Anyways on to the things I've noticed...
I still get crashes, not ALL of the time but I can almost predict them when they happen. These are the crashes that have been consistent from the iMac to the G5. It seems Illustrator CS doesn't like opening files out of the finder. Mind you, It doesn't crash every time I try to double click(or "command O") an Illustrator file in the finder to but I would say one file out of every 15 or so just takes down Illustrator without so much as a hang. This can occur as often as 2-3 times a day or once a week. I haven't pinpointed any similarity in the files that would cause this as I work with hundreds of files a day but it's just something I've noticed. The only other crashing that I've noticed is that sometimes when I cut and paste text it occasionally crashes. This could be a font thing? Maybe. By the time it crashes Suitcase has opened so many fonts that I'm not sure I could pinpoint it.
Anyways, I frequent these forums and they've been really helpful in every problem I've had and listening to some of the stories it sounds like I've been fortunate as to not run into more problems. So yeah, thats my information. I hope it helps and I would be glad to send in a crash log the next time I run into a problem.
John
The other issue seems to be switching to illustrator. It is really slow to come around at times. I will pay close attention to see if it is a clipboard problem as you suggested.
Another issue that I have had is saving in photoshop ( I know you are not the photoshop team but thought I would add this anyway) where sometimes when I am saving a photoshop file it just stalls and stalls until I switch to another adobe app (usually illustrator) to get it going again.
What I am thinking is perhaps a security issue.
Something akin to antivirus protection but just this is just a thought.
I've got a user-base of roughly 35 on Panther, using Dual2ghz / 1gbRAM. We use Suitcase for font management, don't use Entourage, haven't got Norton (yet), but continually have problems w/ Illustrator crashing, both in 10, and CS. 10 is used until our vendors/clients are completely ready to accept CS files, and my users hate it; have hated it since it first came out.
The one thing I've noticed on a fairly regular basis when the crash occurs and the report (that's sent to Apple) is generated, and which seems odd to me:
0x1000 - 0x9fff com.adobe.illustrator 11.0 /Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS/Illustrator CS.app/Contents/MacOSClassic/Illustrator CS
The odd thing in that line from Console's crash log is the mention of MacOSClassic - why should CS have anything to do with Classic, or, even mention it? Shouldn't Classic be on it's own? What I mean is why, if CS is an OSX native app, and doesn't use Classic, does this line appear in the crash log(s)?
I have no scientific proof, just a theory, that some OS X apps are still using / trying to use some part of the Classic OS, or, the Classic OS isn't letting go of things it should...I know...not very scientific at all, but I see this line all the time in crashes...most in Adobe apps (Acrobat? holy cow!) I can shut Classic off (we use it for Outlook, since Microsoft hasn't really been so kind to those of use using Exchange and OS X), and still get the same error messages within Console when a crash happens...
I also get / have issues w/ adobe_agm_core (as an offending command) when printing.
So, I'll be sending more crash logs than I think you really want, but I'm very happy to do so in hopes that it clears this up.
I'll also try to answer the questions posed at beginning of this thread:
Are you using Norton Antivirus with Autoprotect running? If so, if you disable it does the crashing stop? What version? NO ANTIVIRUS, YET. TROUBLES INSTALLING CORP. EDITION, BUT PLAN ON USING IT ONCE THOSE ARE CLEARED UP.
Is there a default printer installed and selected? If not, after you install one, does the crashing stop? ALWAYS SETUP;MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.
Does this happen with one file, many files, all files? What about a new file with just a box?
MANY FILES; NO COMMON THREAD. w/BOX - can't recall, but wouldn't be surprised.
If the crash happens when saving, is it to the local drive or to a network drive?
BOTH - NO WINNER HERE
If the crash happens when printing, how is the printer connected to the computer (local, network, wireless network)?
NETWORKED. CANON CLC5000, 1140's;SERIOUS PAGE SETUP ISSUES HERE. DEFAULT PAPER SIZES NOT AVAILABLE. DOES NOT SAVE PAGE SETUP SETTINGS.
Did Illustrator ever work? If so, what had changed recently when you started crashing? (new software, etc...)
Have you tried resetting your permissions? If so, did that help?
YES - THIS GETS DONE CONSTANTLY, BUT DOESN'T HELP W/ ILLUSTRATOR.

First, please forward all those crash logs off to aif...@adobe.com. We love to see them.
I can clear up the "Classic" mess though...believe it or not, it's as intended.
When Apple first came out with it's "Carbon" platform, it was designed around the concept of dual binaries, meaning that you could actually have two different ways of running your program. One was a Carbonized Code Fragment Manager application which would run on OS 9 and OS X, or you could have a Carbonized Mach-O application, which would ONLY run on OS X. The debate over CFM vs. MachO has raged on for a couple of years now, but Apple has declared that MachO is the one and true native binary format for OS X, and that they will only be supporting CFM as long as they have to. When we shipped AI 10 it ran on both OS 9 and OS X, and was a Carbonized CFM application. By Apple's documentation, Carbonized CFM applications were to live inside the Illustrator Package in the "MacOSClassic" folder. In this case Classic doesn't signify "Classic" instead it signifies CFM. It would have made far more sense to name the folder "MacOSCFM" but hindsight is 20/20 right? AI CS also shipped as a Carbonized CFM application, however due to us adopting many OS X features, didn't run on OS 9. As a sidenote, Carbon Mach-O apps and Cocoa Mach-O apps live inside the "MacOS" folder, which is also slightly confusing, and would've been better named "MacOSMach" folder IMHO. What are they going to do if/when we go to 64 bit apps? "MacOS64"?
All currently shipping Adobe Products that run on OS X except for Distiller (as far as I know...) are Carbonized CFM applications.
So when you see "MacOSClassic" in the crash logs, all that it is signifying is that the application is CFM based instead of MachO based. Unless you are a real MacOS geek, it doesn't matter in the slightest which we are using. It has caused us a lot of pain though, as many people panic when they run updaters and see the words "MacOSClassic" go flashing by, and think that they are being downgraded from a OS X version to a OS 9 version or something similar.
Hope this clears that up...and to reiterate, we love them crash logs. Please send them in!
Beautiful! Thanks for the quick response. This does make sense, and clears up a big question I had about whether Classic was truly a part of the problem or not. Do you know if / when the CS Suite is going to be upgraded to use only the Mach-0?
I'll start getting you those crash logs!
Thanks again.
Ben
Honest answer is I don't think I can discuss it. Sorry.
Just kiddin' - thanks for the info. Will send crash logs as I get time to collect.

Although turning off 'enable fontsync support' in AI's Suitcase preferences has helped reduce crashing a lot so far.
- Norton Antivirus - not installed.
- default printer - installed and selected. Do not have another one to install.
- happens intermittently, with many files.
- crash doesn't only happen when saving, but I usually save locally.
- doesn't crash when printing,
- Illustrator has never been the most stable program in my opinion. But prior to upgrading to Panther (from 10.1), I think it crashed less often.
- I reset permissions about once a week. Crashing persists.
- Administrator account.
I get the " The application has unexpectadly quit" I have not been able to log in AT ALL -- so I cannt change any of the front settings. I am a new Suite user (since Feb'04) so I don't know if there is another way to make the changes without launching the application.
Below is a copy of the crash report that the application generated to send to apple. I thought it might be of help. Thank you.

Hope this help
I have tried both trashing the .plist, and/or preferences file, as well as repaired permissions, and other general maintenance on the system, in order to try and remedy this. I'm out of ideas. Reinstalling has not fixed the issue.
I have pasted the crash log below:

Binary Images Description:
1-the file contains type with an appearance added, and
2-the type object is in an envelope, and
3-the envelope is left in "edit envelope" mode, and
4-the user performs an operation that involves merging swatches (even if they undo the merge), and
5-the document is saved and closed.
This damages the document and results in a "Can't open the Illustration" error.
We have found a way to avoid damaged files. If you have conditions 1-4 listed above, instead of saving and closing, do the following:
5-Save, draw a rectangle, delete it, save again.
Now the document is saved and can be safely closed, at least in our experience.
p.s. The way enveloped, appearanced objects are treated needs some work. Besides this bug, there is no one-step way to scale enveloped type AND the strokes on that type at the same time.
Also, when printing art that contains appearance strokes and files on an object in an envelope, AND a feather effect on any object, AND page setup is set to scale, the resulting image on paper is scaled, but the appearance stroke weights are not.
Thanks again for the information, it is handy to know at the very least, when working in illustrator, to know what to avoid.
I thought it was important to mention that I've also been getting system freezes (not kernel panics) on my G5. I did have Norton Antivirus and LiveUpdate installed, but turned OFF. I've run the Apple hardware checks and everything checks out, so I did a "Find" on "Norton" and "LiveUpdate" and I trashed every remnant. My machine now seems fine. However I just tried the task in Illustrator , and it still crashes.
I'll send AI Crash Log as a separate attachment.
I have the luxury of owning the WIN version of CS, too.
On it everything works.
SO the files don't appear to be damaged.
Details
Are you using Norton Antivirus with Autoprotect running? If so, if you
disable it does the crashing stop? What version?
NO Norton
Is there a default printer installed and selected? If not, after you install
one, does the crashing stop?
Tried it both ways -- no difference
Does this happen with one file, many files, all files? What about a new
file with just a box?
Many files. Mas OS X Only.
If the crash happens when saving, is it to the local drive or to a network
drive?
Both
If the crash happens when printing, how is the printer connected to the computer (local, network, wireless network)?
Both 10/100 ethernet and direct USB.
Did Illustrator ever work? If so, what had changed recently when you started crashing? (new software, etc...)
Yes. In fact, I printed a document twice today and then the third time I tried, big crash and I have spent 3.5 hours (again) troubleshooting,
Have you tried resetting your permissions? If so, did that help?
No help.
Is your user account Administrator or User?
Admin.
Anything else you think might help?
A fast fix--I hate Windows!
I've sent a couple of reports to you guys and about 30 or so to Apple, surely both you and Apple together can resolve this issue? Unless Apple have they're waiting to sell it as part of Tiger, which seems to be coming out awfully quick since the launch of Panther!
I'm using a 6 month old G5 1.6 Ghz, 1.25 GB of SDRAM, running OS X 10.3.4
I've tried changing many things but nothing works. I have over 50 GB on my hard drive, which I set up as my Primary scratch and then an external hard drive as my secondary, which also has over 50 GB available.
I keep crashing on saving, which as I keep mentioning to you guys and Apple, defeats the object of saving a file so as not to loose any work!
The best one I've had so far is "Can't print the file, Can't save the file" in one message, very handy that!
Sorry if I'm coming across abrupt, but I'm really annoyed at the amount of time I lose over these crashes. I have just set up on my own in January and I'm trying to get established as one of the top designers in the area. I can't afford to be losing time like this. Every crash brings the deadline closer, with the same amount of work to do half hour ago, and these little crashes just keep adding up.
Now I'll be objective and try to give you some insight into what I'm doing in reference to your questions.
Firstly about a project I'm working on now:
It's size is 320 mm by 750 mm, CMYK, only 2MB in size. I can send yo uthe file if that helps). What happens is that I have about 20 colours in my used swatch es area already. When I change a colour of something (chosen from the Pantone Library) the additional colour seems to cause the file to not want to print or save. I've tried "saving as", "save as a copy" and even copying and pastng into a new file. It either won't save, crashes or gives the same error in the new file.
1. Are you using Norton Antivirus with Autoprotect running? If so, if you disable it does the crashing stop? What version?
I'm using 9.0.2, tried the above and still the same error of "can't print, can't save file..."
2. Is there a default printer installed and selected? If not, after you install one, does the crashing stop?
Haven't crashed whilst printing my problem is saving a file.
3. Does this happen with one file, many files, all files? What about a new file with just a box?
Any size file crashes. Sometimes a newly opened file with nothing in it, some times simple items and, as is the case now, a large file that I have to get done.
4. If the crash happens when saving, is it to the local drive or to a network drive?
Saving to the local drive
5. If the crash happens when printing, how is the printer connected to the computer (local, network, wireless network)?
I haven't crashed whilst printing, but I use Airport extreme and an EpsonRIP X
6. Did Illustrator ever work? If so, what had changed recently when you started crashing? (new software, etc...)
As far as I can remember it has always crashed at random times. I've tried to pinpoint when but it is totally random in regards to the file sze, what I do before hand etc... I've tried turning version vue on and off but nothing. Not sure if it might have something to do with the clip board, copying and pasting objects?
7. Have you tried resetting your permissions? If so, did that help?
I reset my permissions every Friday the last month or so with Cocktail, to ensure all my permissions are correct. But the problem has been around since installation
8. Is your user account Administrator or User?
I'm the administrator on my G5, I 3 other accounts set up on it for personal use, as I work from home.
9. Anything else you think might help?
I keep getting pointless AI Temp 0000035428 type files, that have zero K, what are these files and why do they keep appearing? Even when I don't crash they appear!
I really hope you can sort this out soon. I have Studio MX and have Freehand available, but like most people your either an Illustrator user or Freehand user. I'm an Illustrator user myself and don't want to have to start using Freehand as my main EPS creater.
Kindest regards
Glynn
PS I don't envy your task, but as I said, perhaps if you and Apple put your heads together as they have had about 30 or so reports from me!
Perhaps the problem lies in the EPS encoding???
Cheers
Glynn
The prob. was just fixed by selecting a default printer which I had not done before... (it seems weird to me that this would be the problem but it was) these were my issues until it was solved....
hope this helps someone....

Illustrator unex. quits on launch. I can sometimes see the tools before it quits but not always.
This is on a machinge that I did a fresh install of 10.3 and then did a fresh install of the CS package standard ed.
Illustrator CS has never opened yet.
Photoshop and ID open fine.
I fixed permissions to no avail.
I removed any monitor calibration I did, to no avail.
This is on the admin. account.
This in on a G4 933 with 10.3 + all the system updates.
We are not running norton.

I am having problems everytime I place an eps image. I use BARCODEPRO to create barcodes. Illustrator CS will not allow me to NON-LINK the barcodes at all, so I have to LINK the bar codes. I then place the bar codes and when I attempt to SAVE - it UNEXPECTEDLY QUITS, I cannot get past this problem.
Why won't Illustrator CS allow us to 'parse' or NON-LINK eps images? It is also not consistant with the problems. I had 30 jobs from a client with a Photoshop eps image. On some of the jobs there was no problem, however, on half of the jobs - Illustrator would not print. We had to open the photoshop image up, save as a Photoshop psd. file, replace it in Illustrator and only then would it print.
Please help.
I don't have time at the moment to submit the stuff, as I"m trying to get out Font Cache Cleaner 1.1 <http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/fcache/fcache.html>. I'll try back after that's done.
Anyway....
Another issue I have just decided IS important is 'Thumbnails'. I have a piece of software called iView Media Pro. You can enter all kinds of media into it and can view the file. This is important to me as a designer, finding images and logos quickly.
I have imported Illustrator files into it but some have appeared with the Illustrator icon. I deduced this is because it was saved without thumbnails. So I was about to create an action and batch the lot to produce thumbnails, but it doesn't work. I tried to save a file, to test the action, with a thumbnail but it doesn't create one? I've tried it with mac preview and with Tiff preview, but neither work. It just produces a file with the generic Illustrator icon.
Has anyone else had this problem or know how to resolve it? Can anyone save with a thumbnail?
It might be a discussion in the forum and I will look now, but just in case it's not I'll post this message anyway.
Cheers
Glynn (NOT Glenn Robert, LOL ;-) )
To be honest I have found my G5 with 10.3.4 the most troubling machine /software ever ...... literally days of wasted time. Like others here I have faithfully submitted loads of bug reports to apple and talked to Abode hotline. I've had the system and applications re-installed three times.
If anyone can simply list the best fixes I'd be SERIOUSLY grateful.
andrew rutherford.
thanks.

Is there any one else who is having trouble with their thumbnails?
I have started another discussion entitled "Can't create thumbnails in Illustrator CS' If you have a similar problem, perhaps post a reply on that discussion.

Illustrator CS crashes when saving sometimes (doesn't seem to follow any pattern)
Sometimes when I close Illustrator it gives me a message indicating it has crashed... it didn't crash, I closed it...
I am constantly getting Preview messages. I have a G5 1.6 with 1 Gb of RAM and it tells me that it can't preview some files. I haven't seen that message in years since I was using an old G3 that just couldn't handle large files. Now I can just have a couple of fairly simple files open and when I try to switch between them or go back to Illustrator after using Photoshop or MS Word or just about anything else, I get a message that says that the file is too complicated and cannot be previewed. WHY? This is really becoming a pain and I often have to restart to get everything working properly again.
What can I do?

I’ve also experienced this problem trying to save as SVG in GoLive’s web save dialog box with the same result. So whatever it is, it’s how the SVG’s are getting saved...
The problem seems to be SAVING, whether it's EPS (as for myself) SVG or other formats. So the question is: What has changed in the saving process in CS compared to previous version of the Illustrator software? Could it be Version Cue related?
Also, on another point, we haven't heard anything from Adobe about any of the issues we've all discussed. Maybe a little feedback on this major problem would be nice. Just to let us know of any developments or if you are close to resolving this issue!
I'm just over the 7 month mark in my new business, where I had to buy a lot of software and computer equipment. I do feel that I've been sold a little short with Illustrator CS as it is hampering my business in the time I'm (and no doubt many other designers) are losing.
Another question you may answer is: are you and Apple working together on this problem, and other computer manufacturers, in rectifying this issue?
Hope all is going well with the problem solving
Glynn
Thanks all!

I've now installed a brand new set of fonts, all just purchased from Adobe / Bitstream / ITC - it wasn't cheap. I thought this might help to clear up some of these issues. It hasn't.
The fonts have all been checked and cleared by FontDoctor and Suitcase (which is what Extensis recommends). I also cleaned out all font caches using FontCache Cleaner, and this cleared up some corruption issues.
We have Norton running (9.0.2 (005), and auto-protect is on. I've just shut it off on my system, but this isn't really the best way to defeat this.
I don't know where to select a default printer in CS, but for those running 10.3, there is a default printer setup. We print via network, to Canon's and HP's.

Hope all this helps. Perhaps creating an auto-save for illustrator so users don't have to worry when it quits?;)

Trash your preferences and see for your self.
agreed! i only wish i could call the shots, but alas, the corporate policy makers have said that not installing this on my users' is a no-no.
well, as long as you promimse not to tell 'em, i suppose i could give it a try, and see what happens.
trash illustrator prefs? or, are you talking about the NAV prefs?
thanks!
ben
In the NAV Control Panel, just turn off auto-protect. What happens is that NAV wants to check each change made to the AI temp files while you are working. It also can cause problems with saving.

I was really wondering why nobody reinstalled Illustrator CS and see if that would do the trick, when I read Chrystal Henkaline's message 63.
What she did was my first action and it worked very well for me, after having experienced a lot of the problems already described. By the way, the same happened to me when using Acrobat Distiller; reinstalling it was the solution to the problems there too.

2. Is there a default printer installed and selected? If not, after you install one, does the crashing stop? Yes I have a default printer installed and selected and have so from day one.
3. Does this happen with one file, many files, all files? What about a new file with just a box? It seems to apply to all situations in this question except the box question. It seems to happen more often when I have a file with a lot of placed files in it.
4. If the crash happens when saving, is it to the local drive or to a network drive? All of my saving is done to a local drive.
5. If the crash happens when printing, how is the printer connected to the computer (local, network, wireless network)? The printer is connected via a network connection.
6. Did Illustrator ever work? If so, what had changed recently when you started crashing? (new software, etc...) I feel like I've had problems with it crashing randomly from day one of installing it. New system updates don't seem to affect it any and I've also made changes from people in the forums to try and fix it with no changes in behavior. It seems to me that Adobe is slacking on Illustrator with not updates or fixes since it's release. I can't imagine that it was perfect from day one.
7. Have you tried resetting your permissions? If so, did that help? Yes many times and actually I do it everytime I install anything new to my system. This seems to not have any affect on Illustrator's behavior.
8. Is your user account Administrator or User? I'm set up as an Administrator.
9. Anything else you think might help? Some bug fixes from Adobe would help. Like many posts I've read I too also send in what I was doing to Apple when Illustrator crashed when that crash log application window comes up. It might be wise for Adobe to tap into those crash logs to see what the problem might be.

Can you just pull out the Adobe Online pluggin from Illustrator Extentions folder, as well as you Illustrator preferences, and put them on your desktop for now?
See if that makes any difference and check back.

So, what I'm thinking now is:
Have you installed any resent fonts that are not controlled by your font manager? Have you installed any new pluggins or extentions? Have you repaired your permissions lately?
Did you try deleting Adobefnt.lst files? Do a search for .lst, because they are all over the place, and there are some named Adobe05fnt.lst and Adobe06fnt.lst and so on. Do not delete the Adobefnt.db file.
