I have been enjoying Illustrator CS4's ability to have multiple artboards. I have made collections of related illustrations saved them as Illustrator files then also as a sRGB [Smallest File Fize] multipage pdf as a catalog of the contents.

It worked fine for quite a while, then mysteriously the last few days I noticed the pdf wasn't as big as it should have been.

When I open the recent pdfs they have all the pages, but are empty with:

"This is an Adobe® Illustrator® File that was saved without PDF Content…" plastered all over it.

I'm scratching my head on this one. I ran with only Illustrator to ensure it had the max. memory. I tried it with a bare minimum of 4 simple graphics. Same result, no content.

Should I be looking at Distiller or is this all handled internally?

To clarify, the original Illustrator file is saved with pdf preview and opens fine even in Preview to reveal the full multipage .pdf with contents visible. Just when I save to .pdf I lose the images.

Did you Trash the settings folder the Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings folder in your User's Preferences?

If so try that.

Did you check the settings in the pdf save options dialog?

In your save settings for AI files is Create PDF Compatible File checked?

I'm using CS3 on a Mac and i'm having the same issues. when i save as a pdf it has the "This is an Adobe® Illustrator® File that was saved without PDF Content…" all over the artboard. it goes on to say... "To place of open this file in other applications, it should be re-saved from Adobe Illustrator with the "Create PDF Compatible File" option turned on. This option is in teh Illustrator in the Illustrator Native Format option dialog box, which appears when saving an Adobe Illustrator file using the Save As command."

However, I don't see this option anywhere.

The option is in the Save and Save As dialogue box, so you have to "save as" to access the option. You don't need to change the name of the file unless you really want to; it's o.k. to overwrite because you can always take the pdf-compatible option off again - it makes files a lot heavier, especially if you have placed images.

In my case it cleared up after a restart.

Illustrator, or something, ate all my memory.

It is not in the Save As PDF dialog but rather when you Save As AI format in the I options dialog. If you save as pdf it is obvious that you are saing as a PDF compatible file since it is in fact pdf.

So if you only use the pdf format for saving out of AI then you will not see this option and do not have to be concerned about it.

I hope that clarifies things for you.
