Teri, thanks. After being frustrated by this for months, I finally decided to ask in the forums... and 10 minutes after asking the question I figured it out on my own. Was hoping to come back and delete my post before anyone read it... how embarrassing. :)

Sorry if the answer to this is obvious... I can't find an answer in the Illustrator manual or in these forums. I'm working with Illustrator 9. Sometimes I open a file I've been working on and the bounding boxes and text underlines show up in red, and workability is severley compromised. Today it's gotten odder: some elements I create or move from one file to another show up in red, and others stay blue. I'm sure there's a perfectly rational explanation for this, but I haven't been able to figure it out...

Thanks!

Sounds like it's a two-layer file. Selection feedback is in the layer's selection color, and always has been ever since Illustrator 5 (the first version to have layers.)

New Layer cycles through a predefined list of layer colors, and Red is the second color on the list.

You can change a layer's selection color in the Layer Options dialog.

Andrew,

Don't be embarrassed. If it confused one person, it is likely to confuse someone else someday, and maybe this thread will help them.

(That is, it might if more people would try searching the forums first. :-)
