Are the font replacements causing the updating problem? It was working fine before I changed printers. The reason I changed printers is because I wanted color in my pdf output.

I need help to reslove these font problems. I am confused.

This is on FM6, Win2000. Basic out of the box setup with all the updates.

...because it contains no openable nongenerated files.

All I did was change my printer from our local network printer to the Acrobat Distiller.

The I got all these font errors:

Yes. If the files in the book aren't already open at the time
of update, FM needs to open them in the background. This cannot
be done if the file has some problem, like unavailable fonts.
If all files have problems, you get the message about the book.

Before updating your book, open all the files (Shift File > Open
All Files in Book). Resolve all possible problems with the files.

In your case, you seem to be using fonts in your documents that
aren't really installed in your OS, but instead are made available
through your selected printer driver (so-called printer-resident
fonts). This is not recommended, and you should install all fonts
you use on your system. When you change printer, the fonts are
no longer available and become replaced.

In order to create PDFs from FM, you should always use the Distiller
printer instance and as Thomas suggests, never use printer resident
fonts.

For a write-up of how you can (not meaning you should, because you should not, just that you can) use fonts you don't have installed, see <http://www.techknowledgecorp.com/help> and look in the left column for "Where do fonts come from?"

Yes, I agree. I always wondered why our company style guide specifies fonts that we do not own. But we do, you see, they came with our printer :) So we have them, but we just can't use them.

Thats why I am changing fonts to those that I have on my system. All will be well.

Thanks for the help :)

Some printers also have the font files on the install CD, so that they can be installed on the computers as well as being on the printer itself. My Xerox did.
