I made changes in my FrameMaker document which consists of 5 documents, TOC and Index. When I update the book in the document window, I get an Inconsistent Numbering Properties message. The pages are numbered with a chapter number then a page number, but the TOC will not update to that format.

Which document exhibits incorrect numbering? Did you update the numbering for it in the book?

Now, I don't know what version of FM you're using, but if you're using 6 or 7, you can add <$chapnum> to your TOC building blocks on the reference pages.

That message is easy to trigger -- for example, if you import Document Properties from one doc into another. But generally, if you ignore it, the book forces its requirements on the files and you won't get it next generate.

But TOC issue is mostly determined by the building blocks on the reference page. You would have to tell us a lot more about your setup.
