Figure<$chapnum>-<n+>\t
In Arnis sugggestion he shows F: which would result in F:<your caption>, my suggestion follows your question to have Figure 7-1
Make sure you have your numbering Properties dialog box is set with the correct chapter # for each chapter using your book.
I have a chapter within a book which contains alot of photos, all of which i want to give a Figure number, ie Figure 7-1, 7-2 etc (7 being the chapter number). Please can someone help me out with how i automate this process as I will no doubt be adding more photos to the document and i don't want to have to manually re-number the figures throughout. I have tried several times to create a format, but it always ends up affecting the numbered lists which appear before and after the photographs.
I hope i have made some sense in explaining this!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Avril Roberts
Use series numbers in your autonumbering. These are single characters
at the start of the auto-number followed by a colon, e.g.
C:<$chapnum>-<n+> for a chapter plus section number
F:<$chapnum>-<n+> for a figure number
These series numbers work independently of each other. See your FM
Manual or online help for more details.
I strongly suggest that you read the FM manual "About Numbered and
Bulleted Lists" and pay close attention to the "Series Label" section
on p.117 of the latest FM7.x manual.

Arnis' suggestion is indeed the correct one.
In my opinion, series lables are one of the truly great features of FrameMaker
numbering. So simple but so useful.
Yes, but it is difficult to find info on series labels in the documentation, so I see why many FrameMaker users miss the concept or have trouble with it.

Another concept may users have trouble with is searching the Internet for help and information resources for FrameMaker.
For example, these Google search turn up a lot of hits on the series numbering topic:
NOTE: Uppercase AND and uppercase OR, parentheses, and the quotes, are required for the searches to operate correctly.
* This one is useful to find resources that refer to both auto number and autonumber:
framemaker (auto AND number)
* This one finds resources for series labels, which FrameMaker formally refers to as series identifiers:
framemaker ("series label" OR "series identifier")
