I have question that I think should be simple for people knowing FrameMaker.
I generate .mif files that then used with Adobe FrameMaker to create a PDF file. What I want is to create a .mif file that will result in a PDF document with pages of different size.
i.e: some pages that are 8.5" by 11.0" and some page that are 17.0" by 11.0".
But is seems I can't. I have the impression that a FrameMaker documents can have only one page size.
Am I right or is there a way to specify a page size that would not be overwriten by the document's page size property "<DPageSize>" ?
Thanks for helping.
Alex
This is a response that I sent on another forum. Hope this helps!
Doug,
You wrote in an earlier email:
“We historically generate the standard 8.5 x 11 content in one PDF file with two place holder pages (front and back) for each 11 x 17 schematic, then generate each 11 x 17 schematic in a separate PDF file and replace the place holder pages with the schematic PDFs (page numbers are placed manually on each schematic file). This is a very time consuming and tedious process (not to mention prone to human error).”
I was assuming from this earlier statement, you do the same as we do and create a 11 X 17 file within the book with the 11 X 17 drawings (see attached image of sample book). This way you do not have to worry about not have page numbers for the 11 x 17 pages.
For example, to put an 11 X 17 page(s) in the middle of a chapter you would do the following:
1. Use your normal chapter template and enter the information up to the 11 x 17 document
2. create the 11 x 17 document in a new file (using the 11 x 17 template chapter pages).
3. Then using your chapter template begin the chapter where you left off in step 1.
In all, this process has you working in three different Book Files. I know it seems a bit convoluted, but it seems to work for page numbering without having to muck around in Acrobat.
Does that make sense?

Megan,
I’m having trouble setting up an 11 x 17 Master page without messing up the rest of the text flow. I have created an 11 x 17 Master page but it is still 8.5 x 11 page size. If I change the page size to 11 x 17, all the pages in the text flow change to 11 x 17.
I must be missing something. Help!
Thanks.
Doug

Good Morning Doug,
Yes, it prints 8.5 X 11 pages as 8.5 X 11 and 11 X 17 as 11 X 17. And, yes, I have master pages set up for 11 X 17. If you have any problems, let me know and I can try to help you out.

Hi Megan,
Does this print the 8.5 x 11 pages as 8.5 x 11 and 11 x 17 as 11 x 17 or is everything on 11 x 17? I am assuming you have a master page set to 11 x 17 for schematics, right?
Thanks.
Doug

Hi Doug,
I was playing around a little bit with my Frame Book and came up with the following:
1. From the File menu, select Print Book.
The Print Book window appears.
2. Select the Print To File check box.
3. Change the Print to File field to .ps extension.
4. Click Setup... button.
The Print Setup window appears.
5. From the Name drop down menu, select Adobe PDF.
6. Click Properties button.
The Adobe PDF Document Properties window appears.
7. Select the Paper/Quality Tab.
8. Click Advanced button.
The Adobe PDF Converter Advanced Options window appears.
9. From the Paper Size drop down menu, select 11x17.
10.Click OK.
The Adobe PDF Document Properties window appears.
11.Click OK.
The Print Setup window appears.
12.In the Orientation Group Box, select the Landscape radio button.
13.Click OK.
The Print Book window appears.
14.Select the Generate Acrobat Data check box.
15.Click Print.
The PS file is generated.
16.Run Distiller to create the pdf.
Try this method and let me know if it works for you. I got it to work here.
Good Luck.
Megan

You're correct that a FM file can only have a single page size.
However, FM book files can contain FM files of various page sizes. So,
whenever you need to change the page size, make a new FM file and use
the FM book file to keep things together.
You only need to have one book file and three different FM files in your process, not three book files.
Anyway, as it seems to be the only solution for now, I will build multiple ".mif" files and add these to a single book.
Thanks to all for the quick answers.
Alex
Are you building the MIF files through some programmatic approach? If
so, a page size change would be quite easy to implement as a trigger
for a new file.
I hope this is clear enough.
thanks.
FrameMaker can do documents with different page-sizes, but when the page size is supposed to vary, you have to start a new FM file.
Example
FM-File "A.fm" with page size "Letter"
FM-File "B.fm" with page size "A3"
FM-File "C.fm" with page size "Letter"
In the PDF you will have: Letter>A3>Letter
And the printer will also print Letter>A3>Letter.
If you have a more elaborate mileage, you may think about indesign, which can do spreads, foldouts and whatnot.
Hote this helps,
Franz.
