Problem: When installing from DVDs, the "Checking System Profile..." progress bar makes it to 90%, then hangs, causing you to abort using Task Manager. Changing startup and services settings, or disabling antivirus software doesn't help.

Here's what got me past the hang.

My guess is that it's a DVD player issue. These install disks thrash like crazy during installation. I did this:

1. Copy the "Application 1" disc contents to a folder on your hard drive then run setup.exe from the folder the same as you would from the DVD (see Adobe install instructions).

2. The "Checking System Profile..." progress bar completes and gets you to the serial number entry page.

3. Enter your serial number and let Disc 1 install from your hard drive.

4. When the installer asks for Disc 2 in the c:\ drive (which can't be done), cancel the installation. You'll get some troubleshooting information and links that you may find interesting. Exit the installer.

5. NOW try to install Disc 1 from your DVD drive. Again you get "Checking System Profile...", but since you've already entered your serial number, you get the install window for installing or reinstalling CS4 components. Check the programs that you want to install, then proceed. It's working for me so far.

Good luck,

J.

Hey everybody

I did find a solution to this problem - do not give up so easy =)If I remember correctly, there was a similar issue installing cs3 on xp when it came out. i run vista business, with fresh installs of master suite, dreamweaver, and photoshop. Nothing would work, it kept freezing at 90% of checking system profile. My fix:

1) When the setup finishes at 90%, open task manager but do not close setup.exe yet. (ctrl+alt+delete)
2) goto start>run and type in appwiz.cpl (or open programs and features from control panel - add/remove programs in xp control panel)
3) you should see whatever you attempted to install show up in the program list. Click on it as if you were going to uninstall it. Once it is highlighted (without running uninstall) close setup.exe using the task manager in step one then click uninstall in the program list. setup should continue as usual.

good luck!

Hmmmm, I was so excited when I thought you had a solution to this. I've been fighting this issue for about 2 weeks now. I tried what you said, and even a few variations of it, and it didn't work for me.

It says the following when you run the "uninstall/change":

-------------------------------
System Check

Critical errors were found in the setup for Adobe Photoshop CS4:

The installer database is invalid: please reinstall the product from the original media

Please see the Setup log file for details. Click Quit to exit Setup.
-------------------------------

Hmmm, that is no good. If I listen to what it says and look in the log file, it ends like this: (In C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Installers, for those wondering where the logs go)

My brother could install perfectly ok, and his simply went from that point, and it looking exactly the same to the main installer. Ugh.

Any ideas?

Call Tech support. Installation issues are handled free.

GC,

If you are using XP64 you should know it is not supported.

I had this problem then used the CS4 Cleanup script. Afterwords, CS4 installed lickety split.

Hmmm, did you have any CS3 apps installed? I have Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere, all CS3. I am just trying to upgrade Photoshop to CS4.

I'll give that a try though.

Yes! After spending hours wrestling with Adobe tech support, I decided to try Jeff Kracke's suggestion. It worked for me just as he described.

Thanks.

Hey Blokes,
I found an easy solution to this problem, which had me pulling my hair out all weekend.
I deleted all of my extracted files from where I had them under Program Files, then re-extracted them to my desktop and ran the setup from there.
It worked a treat for all of my CS4 applications.

Alright well none of the previous methods have worked for me.
I also scoured google extensively looking for the same problem and solution.

But I have come up with my own way and it seems to have gotten me past the hanging "Checking System Profile..."
I knew something was weird since I haved installed previously fine.

---------------------------------------------
(I AM RUNNING OSX 10.5.4 Leopard, sorry Windows people )
(I AM NOT UPGRADING FROM CS3, THIS IS A CLEAN INSTALL ON A CLEAN OSX)
---------------------------------------------

Mount the setup image, in my case it is Adobe Master CS4 (ADBESTAMCS4_LS5.dmg)

Open up terminal
Login as Super User
"sudo -s"
"*******"
Go into the Disk directory
"cd /Volumes/Adobe\ CS4\ Master\ Collection\"
Go Further
"cd Adobe\ CS4\ Master\ Collection\Setup.app\Contents\MacOS\"
Open the Installer
"open ./Setup"

And there you go!
That simply opens the installer process with complete access rights as the Root user, so whatever problem I was having seemed to go away when running it as Root

- Of course replace Master Collection and the appropiate directory names with what you have.
- Also the backslashes are just to escape the spaces in the directory names.. or use quotes whatever you prefer.

Hope that helps at least some people get past this hanging on OSX.

Regards,
Bailey

hey Bailey.
I'm a OSX Leopard user, and i'm dying trying to figure this out, near on formatting.

TOTAL newb to anything as "complex" as terminal, so with a bit of trying out i got the setup to launch.
(isn't this the same as just opening the file itself with the terminal? which i've tried before)

So it launches, but it works out EXACTLY the same as before

and gives me this message in a new terminal window

Last login: *******************************
/Volumes/Adobe\ CS4\ Design\ Premium\ Disc\ 1/Adobe\ CS4\ Design\ Premium/Setup.app/Contents/MacOS/Setup ; exit;
marnus-imac:~ marnu$ /Volumes/Adobe\ CS4\ Design\ Premium\ Disc\ 1/Adobe\ CS4\ Design\ Premium/Setup.app/Contents/MacOS/Setup ; exit;
Begin Adobe Setup
UI mode: Full GUI
logout

[Process completed]

PLEASE HELP GUYS can't even uninstall my CS4 because of the same error

found a solution that worked fine 4 me at <http://www.flashden.net/forums/thread/upgrading-to-flash-cs4-from-cs3/8620?page=1>
Seems setup has some java issues. Well, worked fine for me and everything is working fine here, so if the url dont open, try this to install:
thanks goes to modnarus.

PROBLEM FIXED .

I got the Flash CS4 upgrade to work. If anyone else experiences the same problem when upgrading from Flash CS3 to CS4 here’s what I did to correct.

PROBLEM :

You download the install files and click “setup”. The setup either hangs on the “initializing setup” screen, OR you see the setup screen briefly and it disappears.

SOLUTION :

(1) Attempt to install Flash CS4 upgrade normally (clicking setup.exe). You probably already did this…so you can actually skip…

(2) Go to control panel, add/remove programs and you should see Flash Professional CS4 in the program list. Leave the control panel up, you will need this later…

(3) Navigate to the following folder on your hard drive: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Installers\a68eec966ce913ddaa63251dc82ed31\resources\common\scripts

(4) Locate a file called “ContainerProxy.js” open it with a text editor (E.G.: Notepad).

(5) Go to line 1102 or simply search for: “jsonObj = _jsonToObject(window.external.SetSessionInitialized(initValue));” and replace this line with: “jsonObj = _jsonToObject(SetSessionInitialized(initValue));”

(6) Save the file by pressing [Strg]+S or use the menu: Menu -> File Save.

(7) Go back to the Control Panel

(8.) Highlight software being installed (Flash CS4 )

(9) Reinitialize the installation by clicking on the change/remove button.

(10) Setup should now work as normal.

Hi guys,

I have fixed the problem for myself!! I'll tell you first how I got the problem. I had uninstalled a trial version of Adobe Premiere CS4. Then something happened (not related) that forced me to do a system restore. This reverted my system back to the state when I had Adobe Premiere CS4. So like normal, I just went to Add/Remove progs and tried to remove Adobe Premiere CS4, but when I clicked on the 'Change/Remove' button, nothing happened. Even though my computer thought I had Adobe Premiere CS4, I didn't because of my previous uninstall. Even with system restore, not all things are recovered, some things are permanently deleted.

Anyways, I had a full copy of Adobe Premiere CS4. I inserted the CD and thought I would just install over the copy that the computer 'thinks' I have. Just like everyone else, my setup froze at "Checking System Profile" at 90%. Now I tried everybody's solutions:

1. Downloaded and ran Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
<http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility.shtml>
This detected Adobe Premiere CS4, and I deleted all traces of it. Even after this, add/remove progs still listed it.
2. Downloaded and ran Adobe CS4 CLeanUp script:
<http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html>
This script didn't detect Adobe Premiere CS4 for me like most people.
3. I ran registry cleaners and deleted the folders from program files relating to Adobe Premiere CS4.

So all of the above still did not work for me.
What did work for me, which I discovered by accident:

Copy everything from CD on to the hard drive. Run setup.exe the computer and wait until it gets you frozen to 90%. THEN, re-click on setup.exe. For some reason, when two instances of the setup.exe is running, it gets confused and somehow bypasses the 90% freeze!!!

Try this!! It worked for me. I was running Windows XP, not MAC OSX.
