Either split the layer where you want the shatter to begin or animate the force radius up from zero.

No, force won't do it, neither will splitting a layer. To control the timing of an explosion, you either animate the size of the force spheres or the position. Once a Shatter piece is inside a sphere, no matter what the force is set to, it has permission to be "shattered", so keep the piecces out of the sphere until you need the explosion to go off.
Hope this helps, Brian

It's force 1 that causes the shatter. Animate the size, force, or position.

I found that using Hold Keyframes on Force Radius does the trick. Put Hold Keyframe of zero radius at beginning and then another with chosen radius at frame you want Shatter to engage. Kaboom!

D'OH
Brian's absolutely right on this. I don't know what I was thinking or did the shatter plugin in change whenI wasn't paying attention?
At least half of my answer was partially right, I mentioned the force radius.

In the documentation folder on your installation CD is the Effects index PDF collection. Find the sections for Shatter. Illuminating reading. If you need or expect to make money by using Shatter on your clients' material, you have no choice but to invest in TT's AE5.5 series. Just keep twirling open the parameters for Shatter and thry to figure them out for yourself and you'll see that it would be easier and faster -- therefore cheaper -- to have Brian Maffitt explain the effect to you and present you with practical applications.
