I have added a lens flare to a project and export it with the avid codec with the alpha on, but when I import it on an avid symphony the alpha is all wrong. Is there some setting in the render options that I should be aware of to get the correct alpha with a lens flare? The alpha does not work either when I use the spotlights in 3D space. Thank you!

don't think you can use alphas on lights. you'd be better off bringing the image you want the flare/light to be on into the application you're using to create the flare, and then exporting the flattened result.

The AE-Render-Flare filter by itself does not produce an alpha channel image. You must use an unmultiplying filter (third party) or precomp the flare and use a channel shifting or channel setting filter to move the information to the alpha channel. Check for an alpha before you attempt to render by using the channel view switches on the comp window.

Be sure you've got the alpha active on the render settings and ouput modules. Not all codecs support alphas. If you are unsure, experiment with short tests of only a few frames. Animation codec supports alpha but your Avid codec may not (dunno, don't use Avid).

Easy...get unmult from Knoll and it will automatically make a key for your lights.

As said before, if AE implemented Alpha-as-opacity (the original concept of Alpha) this would not be a problem.

Sadly it doesn't.

You mean when AE, Commotion, Combustion, Premiere, Final Cut, Edit*, AVID, Flint, Flame, Inferno, Quantel, Shake, Photoshop, In-Design, Light Wave, 3DS Max, Maya, . . . and the rest change the way they handle and use alpha channels.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the end.

Thank you, and goodnight.

(behold the rapturous applause that can be heard far and wide!)

Actually, AE is the only program I have tried (but note, I have not TRIED all on your list) unable to handle real aplha-as-opacity.

3D Studio does it gladly, for instance.
